Alderman Shiller's Blue Light Special

A reader writes in:

"Just got back from a walk with the dogs and noticed ladders by the McJunkin building. Didn't think anything of it until a closer look revealed blue flashing lights and cameras being mounted right by the alderman's office. Looks like two sets of 2-cameras facing north and south along Broadway."

  1. Nothing says "Move Here" like those beautiful blue lights.

  2. OMG With all the bad press this past week and now cameras which break through her illusion that there's no crime in the hood, it has been a very very very bad week for Ms. Helen. Poor Ms. Helen.

  3. I am surprised I thought she refused to allow those in her ward. The one that was on Wilson and Kenmore and moved down to Sheridan I think was put in by the commander without her knowledge beforehand.

  4. I know for a fact she detests them so I would imagine she had no say in the matter. Had she had a say, we wouldn't have them.

  5. Maybe the Mayor found out that Uptown was part of the city and said they better clean it up. Found out the mayor of Uptown was actually an alderman that works for him. He did not know because she does not vote or show up to work. All this time he thought the diry section just north of Irving was actually effecting his city. No more dumping up here.

  6. All the better for the Feds to link in and keep and eye on her office door.

This is something I'll never understand about Ald. Shiller. Her complete inability to bend. Every single issue has to be black/white, take-it-to-the-mat, fight 'til there's blood.

Take the Labor Ready situation. All she had to do was return a lousy $250 contribution, at least act like she was listening to the community concerns, and say, well, maybe Labor Ready would be better in a site that's already zoned for it, non-residential, no schools nearby, lots of transportation. And voila! She's a hero.

Instead, she pisses off the taxpaying residents of the 46th and 48th Wards (I overheard someone say that at the hearing that at the next election, a lot of 48th Warders would now be donating to Ald. Shiller's opponent), gets an avalanche of bad press -- not to mention ill will, goes against her neighboring alderman's wishes, has the whole dog-and-pony show of CourajBrendanLaborReadyflunkies show up, and gets into a public "he said/she said" spat with ONE, which has always been her staunch ally.

All for a relatively unimportant zoning change with a company that has never had any presence or history in the ward.

I think most people in the ward would be gratified if she'd listened. It would have meant a ton of goodwill, and people remember stuff like that at election time. Voters would have felt like they mattered.

But Ald. Shiller, no matter what, Just. Can't. Bend. What a difference it would make, and in her favor, if she would simply learn to compromise every so often.

  8. She has proven over and over again that she's not capable of hearing an opinion that differs from hers. Anyone who disagrees with her is labeled evil. This personality flaw will be her undoing.

  9. It looks like a private buiding camera to me. It is focuses on the driveway entrance to the Truman parking lot. There is a similar set of blue light cameras on the East side of Wilson Care at Hazel and Wilson and in the alley that curves behind Wilson Care to the old Burger King.

  10. Could it be there to capture on video the next time some disgruntled residents bash her office window in?

  11. The cameras are to protect her from the "bad apples".

  12. But we are ALL bad apples to Shiller...

  13. She probably took the $250 to buy an 8ball!

  14. Have you seen the window of the AT&T in the Target Building! LOL! Looks like Prison Gates! They must be worried too! This is so sad, really, that all I can do is shake my head and laugh at this point. And but a bullet proof vest!
