Hey, It's A Start...

Seen today at the Wilson Avenue entrance of the long neglected Wilson El station.

  1. Wow! All that work in just two weeks. I can't wait! Oh, how much did that sign cost?

  2. do we think they will also remove all that new graffiti on that unused platform that is to the east of the main platorm? hope so but not holding my breath...

  3. Too little too late. We are one of the oldest and least cared about stops on the whole system. We have been neglected for far too long. Filling some leaking holes and putting some paint on things is not enough. We deserve a new updated platform. This is just a band aid on a band aid on top of a band aid. You cannot polish a turd. We have a big turd on Wilson and Broadway. Not to meantion one in the 46th ward office. Two weeks of work is an insult to the folks who have smell and visit this sorry excuse for public transportation. We should not accept less then what most stops are getting North and South of us. It is a symbol of the lack of respect the CTA and city has for the folks of Uptown

  4. Instead of bitching about it, just be happy something is getting done.

It's not what we want, but it's something. I think Huberman is doing a good job, and there's been some improvements to the red line since he's taken over. Give the guy a chance.

For 3 years nothing has been done to that station. Huberman takes over and the shitty old stairs on the south side were replaced, and now we get the other improvements. It's a start people!

  5. I couldn't agree more with the prior poster. While it's naive to think that our alderman has no influence on the el station, the primary mover is the CTA, and this counts as forward progress.

  6. I agree, there is NEVER too little too late in a restoration.

A lot is needed, and something is getting done. Where is the issue here? A complete overhaul is a lot of work and takes serious planning. We could leave this “turd” the way it is until that planning is done, or we could get some quick fixes in place now and build on that later.

Plus has anyone seen a WORK PLAN that says 2 weeks? Because a 2 day sign went up when the stairs on the South side of the platform were fixed, and it took almost 3 weeks. Something tells me these may be stock signs that are thrown up when work starts.

Lets hold judgment on whether the upgrades are sufficient, until we see what they are.

  7. Can you read? It's not a stock sign, unless all CTA signs say "Wilson" on them. Also, if you read the sign, it says "will be completed by December 2007." I'm not a scientist, but I can add. December is two weeks away.

  8. I love that the motto is "We're working to improve."

  9. December is two weeks away, yes, but December also lasts for four weeks. It doesn't say it will be done on the 1st.

  10. Keep in mind that a full station rehab would most likely entail closing it for a year (as seen on the Brown line work). That's a pretty big hit and something to weigh against these temporary improvements.

I've also read that these north Red Line stops are next up to get the full treatment...

  11. So close it down for a year. I may help clean the area up. I bet everyone on this board could find other ways to take the Red line. May walk an extra five minutes becasue of the area and condition of the Wilson stop. So keep the band aids up. When those decay or have Urban "srt" applied to it, it will be the same turd you all enjoy. Then we all get excited when the next band aid sign goes up. At that time the other El stations will look at least like they were made for 2000.

  12. Well, are we surprised? Wilson Yards in no different than the first Daley/Shiller joint development project. They seem to campaign together and get along just fine when the city wants to give away Uptown property.

There is a 25 year, renewable LEGAL CONTRACT that gave the Cubs Challenger Park for use as a parking lot. That contract, signed in 1991 by the CTA, Park District, and City of Chicago was to protect community's (Graceland Neighbors's) interests. That contact says that the CTA must install drip pans & gutters under the "EL" tracks along Challenger Park to protect the cars beneath.

These, and the ice rink, and the water fountain, and the security force haven't been installed for the last 16 years. When asked again this summer about these LEGAL REQUIREMENTS, the CTA said they would be too expensive. The ark District FOIA officer respondeed in writing, "We don't answer (FOIA) interrogatories."

  13. A letter to the editor in the Red Eye called the Red line trains toilets on wheels. I guess we in Uptown know where the turd landed.

  14. Wilson and Lawrence are the two closest CTA stations besides maybe Belmont and Wellington in the entire system! Closing down Wilson in order to completely tear it down and rebuilt it a LOT more quickly would be well worth it and walking 2 more blocks isn't THAT big of a deal to Lawrence. And NO don't start with "the people that can't walk" neither station has elevators, so clearly you have to be able to climb all those stairs to the platform in order to use the train anyways. It is about a 5 minute walk from Wilson to Lawrence, especially if you cut across behind the bank building and the parking lot to the station.

A similar CTA renovation sign has now appeared at Berwyn and Bryn Mawr's roof is completely gone right now!

  15. It has always made more sense to move the Wilson El down to Montrose so that it would be central to more residents.

  16. Just think, there used to be an el stop at Buena, too, I believe.

  17. No kidding? I've never heard that before. It does explain the odd street configuration at Buena Circle.

  18. Anon November 13, 2007 9:11 PM, so let me get this straight, because the sign says “Wilson” it is not a stock sign? Oh man, thanks for that explanation, now I know that Obama, Daley, the DCCC, and all the credit card companies send me personal letters, I always used to think they were stock letters with my name at the top, but you have really cleared that up for me.

Oh, and PS in the rest of the world, “by December” means on or before 11:59 PM December 31st
