Uptown Pic Of The Day

Sent in by an "Uptown Update" reader. This falcon was spotted on Sheridan just south of the "Buena Pointe" condos. Could this be one of the falcons living in the Uptown Theatre? The falcon was standing on it's prey, a pigeon, who may have eventually gotten away.

  1. I live in a courtyard building and one morning there was a TREMENDOUS amount of ruckus by what seemed to be every bird in the neighborhood. I looked out to the other side of the building and a Falcon was perched on the top of our building. Amazing. Usually all you see is the falcon's handiwork -- the ripped-off pigeon heads on the sidewalk as one walks by Bridgeview Bank to the El.

  7. Like people are totally serious in their comments on here anyway.

    It's a BLOG folks.

  8. Thanks for letting me know you weren't serious - I was really nervous that you were going to import an exotic homeless/crazy person eating bird to go hunting with.

Seriously, how does the first comment being a joke change its meaning? It's like telling a lynching joke and then saying "it's just a joke!" Just doesn't work that way! I think lame obnoxious jokes about killing homeless people tell the audience a little something about the joke teller.

The sentiment in that comment is a big reason why Shiller has been able to mobilize her base. It lends credence to her arguments that the new (and eve not so new) condo owners in Uptown are really just heartless assholes who could care less if all the homeless in Uptown were murdered, so long as it meant they left the neighborhood.

  9. The fewer pigeons the better. I say bring more falcons. They can nest on my roof. As long as they don't eat the cardinals I have seen nesting nearby. Nice to see a bird with some color.

-->> The reason Shiller won is plain and simple:
    a) She out spent JC
    b) She bought here votes
    c) In IL anyone can vote. A lot of ghost voters.
    d) The Chicago Machine is corrupt.
    e) A lot of younger new people to Uptown from other states etc. don’t know Chicago Politics and until you need something from the City or Shiller you would not know how incompetent she is.
    f) JC was too careful not to offend anyone. I was told he was no different than Helen so why vote for him.
    h) JC got no endorsements from other Alderman or newspapers.
It’s not a heartless ahole condo owner like me that lost the election to Shiller. It amazes me how you all buy into her campaign bs. You play right into her hands.
But I do pay a lot of taxes and work unlike most of the homeless in Uptown and my biggest complaint is we have all the Social Service Orgs in Uptown but they obliviously aren’t doing a go jobs.

Oh, I get it, anybody who disagrees with you or finds your comments offensive is playing into Shiller's hands. Give it up.

I would argue that you are the one playing into her hands, by conveniently playing the role of yuppie demon. You are the boogyman that she gets so much traction out of. You make it too easy.

  12. Whatever why don't you try to be part of the solution not part of the problem.

You probably live in one of those run down or rehapped dumbs in Uptown.

    You are scum!

The dirt on the sidewalk is worth more than you!

  15. It's a blog folks, why fight with each other.

Isn't ok to have a different opinion on things.

I am so sick of the Shiller debate and all the negative.

  17. I am amazed that most people in Uptown blame the problems with the homeless, mentally ill, panhandlers, etc on the social service agencies in the area. Have non of you known a smoker? There is all kinds of help out there to get them to quit but they still smoke. People have to want the help.

  18. Dear Helen said "All this from my photo of a falcon?"

Haven't you noticed that on this blog people will jump at any reason to argue about the the problems of Uptown but very few go to the CAPS meeting, join the block clubs, etc. to help change the problems. They would rather complain.

  19. Now that's not true.

People in Uptown complain here, complain on BPN, AND go to CAPS meetings to complain some more.

And I support them all 100%.

  20. hate to break it to ya... but that pigeon isn't getting away.

  21. Hate to break it to you, but the pigeon DID get away. At least for the short term.

I took the picture. I saw it. It was amazing.

Another person walked by as I took the picture, and the falcon got distracted. The pigeon took its opportunity and within a blink of an eye, the aerial race was on.

The pigeon zoomed back and forth around the Broadway and Sheridan intersection, with the falcon right on its tail.

Then they both flew around to the east side of The Mark. That's when I lost track of them.

I'm going to assume the falcon caught it, because, well, that's what falcons do.

But I was impressed with that pigeon's ability to fly and turn.
I suppose when you are running or flying for your life, you take your game to another level automatically.
