Riviera Rehab Makes Major Progress

Workers were seen today putting in windows on the Broadway side of the Riv building today. The Lawrence side is more or less complete. We will be curious to see if the rehab includes adding the decorative ornamentation on the very top of the building. As close as they have been following the old design, we wouldn't be shocked. Its looking great.

  1. Yes, I've been following that construction too. Very excited at how good it looks. I talked to one of the workers, who said that the bottom would be occupied by Bank of America. Will the top two stories just be office space? Anyone have more detail about that?

  2. Anyone else concerned that the windows look out of place? They look awfully modern in such an old building. Maybe once it's all done they won't stand out as much. Right now they look like windows from a 1995 middle school.

  3. I see what you're saying about the windows Colin, but right now I'll take construction progress of ANY kind over nothing (looking at you, Wilson Yard). Besides, I think the windows have an nice "urban loft" look to them, and greatly improve the look of the intersection.

  5. Yeah, the windows are really flat, and too flush with the face of the building....but, overall the rehab is a huge improvement on that corner!

  6. I share everyone's enthusiasm about something happening on that corner, but why a bank? That seems like the worst use of that ground level space. There are three banks already in a two block radius of that spot.

I just wish there was going to be some other form of business on the ground floor like a restaurant or shop.

  7. From what I understand Bank of America has been demanding the rehab be as thorough as it's been; the results probably would have been much less spectacular (and maybe even nonexistent) without their involvement. And if that bank branch closes because the city is already oversaturated with banks, the space will be all set to go for something more exciting....

  8. True, uptowntodd. I recognize that that very well may be the case.

Maybe they will carve out some space on the ground floor for another retail spot.

That said, I'm thrilled with what they have been doing.

Now if the Uptown Broadway Building and the one kitty-corner from it would get closer to finish, this could really be a great stretch.

But, Colin, don't you think the windows are looking like the original building?

I think it would be cool to have the Riviera sign retro'd as well, but ... right now, I love how they're doing.
