Crime Site On Montrose / Clark?

A reader writes in:

"There were multiple police on Montrose, just east of Clark putting on yellow tape when I got off the bus at 6:40 p.m. tonight. I did not see any bodies or evidence of a crime, but obviously something had just happened. There were at least 7 police cars in the area."

Anyone got any information?

Update: From the Tribune -- "About 6:25 p.m. on the North Side in the city's Sheridan Park neighborhood, officers responded to the 1400 block of West Montrose Avenue and found a 29-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Preliminary reports said he was walking on the street when he heard shots and felt pain. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. His condition was not known but police said he was stable."

  1. I happened to be listening to the 23rd District radio at about 6:40. They said it was a shooting.

  2. (1)Shot at the intersection. Victim drove himself to Thorek. Detectives photographed the bullet holes in his car. Also robbery/ vehicular hijacking with shots fired @ 1100 Leland overnight, I forgot the exact time. Maybe that explains the 0430 hour shots fired ? A rough night in Uptown.

  3. This is unreal. These people are savages with no respect for life. These cops are out-maned,out gunned and we have an alderman and mayor who are doing nothing about it except wiping their hands. Just today a member of the cpd was shot and killed as he walked out of his station on the southside. This was a guy who has a wife and family and all he was trying to do was make a difference. With the media and other people not allowing the police to take matter in their own hands this is just the beginning. And to top it off our contry passes a law to bear arms and our mayor would rather do all he can for us to protect ourselves from these people. And he is going to tax it to make it make money. You dont think these gang bangers are paying taxes do you. I have lived here 6 years and never went North of Montrose. Heck with what happed today, last night and a week ago im not sure I want to go North of Buena or Irving Park for that matter.Which sucks because I have to if I want to go to my home. Unreal.

  4. Do cops ever just "walk the beat" anymore? I think there is something to be said for getting out of the car, walking the sidewalks, talking to people and being known. Isn't this what some folks wanted The Guardian Angels to do? Why can't the police go old school and make some allies on the street?

  5. I thought I hallucinated hearing gunshots around 7:15. Perhaps not.

  6. Dop,

I don't know about in Uptown, but there is a beat cop that walks around in the Lincoln Square area. I don't know if it's every day or what, but I have seen him every so often.

  7. This has become comical. I literally just missed this. The police are nowhere to be seen as of late. They have become a reactionary force, with no investigatory skills. Do they need more money? If yes, then vote out the politicians spending frivolously.

As someone who has worked the polling locations I can tell you that even in the worst of times in Chicago there is NO DIVERSITY on ballots in Uptown. Let's try something Uptown, during the next election open your minds up to who is going to fund the under funded NECESSITIES. Who is going to cut the rest of the budget to make sure our police, firemen, & solid teachers are taken care of? Who is going to say NO to TIF greed? Corruption? Crime?

  9. This is horrible, this incident is nearing the common western border of Uptown, getting into the 46 Ward. I believe the ward border is Dover or Beacon? The crime is spreading west. Its terrible and scary. I walk there everyday.

  10. So I just got an e-mail from Tom Tunney (44th Ward - I lived there before I moved here 5 years ago) about the home invasion/break-in on Pine Grove/Belmont the night before last in his ward... It talks about that crime including details about the suspect, ways to protect your home, ways to protect yourself out at night walking, at the train, bus stop, upcoming CAPS meeting times/locations, etc, etc.

Info from the 46th Ward and Helen? Of course there isn't. Ignore the problems, pretend they don't exist, blame everyone else, let people die...

  11. It sure is a shame to see everyone so afraid and they have good reason to be. They need more cops walking the beat like they use to. I don`t even see any cop cars going around the known hot areas. The only ones I see is when they are going on a call with their lights flashing and horns blowing. In the old days they use to drive up and down the streets looking for trouble. Now they only appear when there is a call and then they vanish. You also had undercover cops walking the streets and making arrests. Hopefully something gets done as summer looks to be a rough one in Uptown.

I could not agree more. Whats the point of having the police if all they do is show up after the violence has happened and clean up the mess. I use to see cops patrolling all the time now I rarely see them. Hell, the corner of Magnolia and Wilson is drug dealing central. Everyone knows this and where are the cops? I saw a cop car parked literally on wilson and magnolia with nobody in it and the gangs were sitting right there selling drugs. They don't give a damn about the cops because they know the cops wont do anything about it.

  13. i disagree with what's being said about police presence. i live on magnolia and i constantly see marked and unmarked police vehicles patroling our street (particularly near sunnyside) and have also seen them stop to talk to some of the loiterers.

is it a perfect system? no, of course not, but every time i've wanted to get there attention (i.e. drunk man sleeping in our front yard), i've been able to find officers driving by and are willing to address the problem.

  14. I still don't understand why people out there think for a fraction of second that cops shouldn't have every right in their power to do whatever it takes. Protect the people? How can they do that when they're walking on egg shells for fear of the entire world seeing them on YouTube. The cops should be feared by all and make us feel safe. I can't even imagine if every move I made at my job in IT had the potential of being put on YouTube. And my job isn't even dangerous let alone life threatening. Something to think about.

  15. Maybe the cops are less-than-diligent in their duties because they still have the same sort of relationship with the bad guys that was written about in "The Man With The Golden Arm" some 60 years ago?

  16. Alderman Gene Schulter's office told me this about the shooting: "It appears to be a retaliation shooting between gang members of the Black P Stone Nation"

  17. What the hell? I've lived in this neighborhood now since 1995, then on Dover between Clark and Sunnyside, now just two blocks away of that.

Back then, this was definitely what would be considered a "Rough and tumble" neighborhood. Many times, I'd have to cross the street walking home from the brown line because of hoodlums hanging on Montrose.

That was ten years ago though, since then, the neighborhood has definitely 'gentrified' rents have doubled, and now... it seems... so has shootings.

Gang symbols that were once rampant, and then disappeared, have resurfaced in pretty much every alley around.

The stories of shootings nearby are far too frequent.

Back in 95 it wasn't at all unusual to hear a police helicopter flying around, and seeing a spotlight flashing across your windows. Do we need that type of surveillance back?

Or do we really need the big brother cameras literally on every block?

I love this neighborhood, and refuse to leave. I know many others in the same boat.

How much longer until we get our own batman / guardian angel / vigilante style justice going on? Not that I'm suggesting or condoning it, just asking. Nothing else seems to help.

Gah these stories just make my blood boil....

  18. There is a beat cop on clark between Montrose and Wilson. At the time of the shooting. Unfortunately the beat cop was reassigned to one of many silly missions done in the 23 district per 2399.

  19. I knew the man who was shot and he was a good person he help me survive uptown in some ways I satyed at 4640 n sheridan for 14 years it hurt to see nothing has change other than a bunch of rich folks and condos being built I hope that is not the direction of uptown moving the poor out and bring in big money it seems as if big money and violence are two parasites either we have one or the other

There are police out there, I see them driving up my alley very frequently as well as up my street. It helps to engage them.

I had a passed out guy sleeping in his car the other day in front of my building, I was waiting for him to regain enough consciousness to start his car drive 30 feet up the street and plow into other parked cars or a innocent person. Instead, I walked out and got his license plate number, then walked to the back of my building where a cop was sitting and asked him to take care of it. Within 5 minutes he had backup and they got this guy out of his car and made him leave the area. All it takes is getting out there and communicating.

People buying condos isn't a bad thing,(I'm a renter by the way)public drinking, drug dealing and shootings are. Talk to your friends and neighbors and get involved, the war isn't against the poor, it's against the gangs. People with money living in condos aren't against you or I for having less money than them, they and we just want a nice neighborhood to live and shop in. Come out to an Uptown community event such as positive loitering or a block club meeting and get to know people, you'll see.
