LEN: “I’m Ready To Roll Up My Sleeves”

Read Lake Effect News's article about James Cappleman's joining the 46th Ward aldermanic race, as well as some news about who else has formed a political campaign committee and looks poised to jump in.

  1. Well I see that Molly Phelan is moving forward with running from the Lake Effect News article.

    Any others?

I am going to search the internet for Molly related dirt. Be right back. Cue elevator music.

During the primary she supported the Madigan candidate for County Board President Terence O'Brien from Rogers Park. That leaves me to decide between Carroll and Cappleman. Notworthy is clearly a machine guy.

I won't support anyone with strong ties to some part of the political machine.

Also on the Illinois campaign website are contributions to Berrios and others. That can be explained by her being an attorney specializing in property tax issues. That I can forgive as it is part of the cost of doing business. She was ward coordinator for Terence O'Brien. That's too much for me to stomach.

Probably sucking up to the Madigans and Berrios on that one.

Anyone ever seen her wearing this t-shirt?

She apparently lived in Berwyn until mid 2008 or so.

I'm guessing the last contribution to Berrios that has her old address on it is merely a carryover mistake from the Berrios campaign. That address also has a Michael Phelan linked to it. Her brother I'm guessing and former Berwyn alderman.

Also a real estate attorney at the family firm. So she moves to Kenmore in 2008 and immediately jumps into the Fix Wilson Yard business. Why the sudden interest in Uptown?

It doesn't show it on the state campaign site, but she also generously donated to the Brendan Reilly campaign.

    http://www.bettergov.org/pdfs/d2_reilly_20070630.pdf

Reilly having earlier in his career worked directly for the Democratic Party of Illinois and Michael Madigan.

Anyone else move into the ward in the last two years or so planning to run? Are they real estate tax attorneys too? Real estate tax attorneys love being in elected office. It made Madigan and Ed Burke rich.

I refuse to vote for anyone who apparently moved into the ward specifically to run for Alderman.

I refuse to vote for NotWorthy.

That leaves Carroll or Cappleman so far.

  2. i looked that up too...could the address listed in Berwyn be a work address?

i think she's been around for longer than a year.

her treasurer, Michael Phelan, has donated much (in the low thousands) to property tax -related incumbents Berrios, Larry Rogers & Jim Houlihan.

But why would she run against Cappleman? And why is her campaign chair a fellow Truman Square Neighbor to Cappleman?

Could it be part of a strategy that worked (for the runoff) in 1999?

  3. Amazing what idiots we still have in this ward. Just read the comments section of the LEN article and you can see why Shiller has stayed in office this long. People are clueless and are satisfied with inept politicians. Oh yeah, they really like the violence that comes with the "community planning" Hellen has done.

I for one will be supporting the ABS politics.

    ABS= Anyone But Shiller

  4. The reader comments following the LEN article look suspiciously like talking points generated by Shiller staff...

  5. eyeinthesky,

the violence has been there long before Shiller, and is comparatively better. It shouldn't be tolerated, but it's a CITYWIDE problem. Chatham is being hit by violence as well. One of the things that is happening is that individual community members need to talk with their neighbors (i.e. the youth that are/can become gang members) to beginning to change the problem, and not shove it on to a community even less able to handle it, like Roseland or ENglewood.

i am a little suspicious as well...any of those names appear as fans for Uptown Update's Facebook page?

i'd like to know if they are "real" people...i wonder if our friend "TOnya Lawler", the perpetual April Fool's joke, is back.

  6. Cappelman, Carroll, Nowotny and Phelan all clearly want to be aldercritter. If they can get the signatures on the petitions they can run. The community doesn't get to decide who runs.

Now Molly Phelan has a great ballot name and so far is the only female in da race. Those should both help her. Her relatively recent move into the ward does bring up some legitimate questions.

When I first heard her name two or so years ago I googled around and came to a similar conclusion to da quirky one.

The contributions she made don't thrill me, but as was said its' "part of the cost of doing business" for tax attorneys.

    The Terry O'Brien support..........
Molly..........please. Dat's just too much to look at as a "cost of doing business".

Hugh and to a lesser extent me did a take down on O'Brien here.

Now I don't know what is driving Molly to run, but I'm guessing it's at least partially some family dynamic and business issues. Tax attorneys, brother was a suburban alderman and her campaign treasurer. I'm getting some Irish family vibe off this..I'm talking whiffs of Guinness and James Joyce or at least Brendan Behan.

I'll stop now. Molly seems ok and I don't want her supporters, Phelanites?, to try to track me down like the Shilleristas have.

By the way State Senate President John "I lend my state supplied car to my DUI driving son" Cullerton has also done quite a handy business in property tax appeals.

I met John once and he was whining about how badly he wanted to be in Congress. This was during the 90's after he ran and lost to Rostenkowski. Cullerton has all the charisma of Dan Hynes without the competence. He was singularly one of the least impressive pols I ever met and unfortunately I've met more than a few.

Here is my current prediction for the aldermanic race. Cappleman meets either Nowatny or Phelan in a runoff and wins. I don't think Shiller is running and I doubt Carroll will get much traction in da ward. I don't think the "cop thang" is going to play well here. I have no problem with him being 'da po po', but others will.

My experience is that 80 percent of cops are ok. Twenty percent have no business being cops and I wouldn't trust them to supervise a parade of kids on Big Wheels riding down an empty rural road.

I suspect Carroll is in the eighty percent.

Anyway may the best person win!

    PS

I'm not running so may the 2nd best person win!

  7. I forgot one thang.

There is another person who recently moved into da ward who is squawking about running.

Male. Likes to sit in local bars and talk.

Let me suggest he refrain from running. I'd give Farinas a better chance than this bozo.

Speaking of Bozos I am a Bozo myself and this ward ain't big enough for any additional bozos.

  8. The cop thing is only a problem for the pro-Shiller vote. If you're a CAPS supporter, you'd be choosing between Carroll & Cappleman.

Since Carroll is in the southern Buena Park region, he should garner much of the Lakeview/BP anti-Shiller vote (much like Katharine Nathan in '99)

Random question -- Moly Phelan related to Dick Phelan?

  9. Random question -- Moly Phelan related to Dick Phelan?

He is not her father as that Richard Phelan worked at a different law firm. Same first name though. Do a internet search and see what you find.

Now back to my dirt dishing.

    http://www.bing.com/search?q=Waguespack+phelan&FORM=BWFD

Scott Waguespack is the Alderman for part of Bucktown-Lincoln Park area. He used to work for the Mayor of Berwyn. Mollys brother and campaign treasurer Michael Phelan was a Berwyn alderman before losing reelection.

Waguespeack sued Michael Phelan in 2007 for defamation although the suit has since been dropped. This initially occurred before the runoff in April 2007.

Waguespack defeated Theodore Matlak who the machine went all out for in the runoff. Matlak was the Terrence OBrien of alderman. In other words HACK HACK HACK. Cough cough.

Supporting hacks directly or indirectly seems to be in the Phelan DNA. If some of you feel this is unfair to blame Molly for her brother's actions I understand your complaint. But he is her campaign treasurer and that makes it fair game.

Again, out of the four declared candidates two are clearly tied to the machine. Two are seemingly not tied to the machine. Unless others join the race that means the only independent choices are Carroll and Cappleman. Notworthy and Phelan can claim to be independent, but their claims ring hollow with me.

Right now I would be happy with either the cop or the social worker. I don't need the Ward Cleaning boss or a machined up tax attorney bringing more hackery to the City Council.

  10. Carroll

    Cappleman

    Nowotny

    Phelan

I shall call them the "Fab Four".

With Gerald Farinas being Pete Best.

  11. Note:

Lorraine just put the kibbash on the Shiller-stooge doing the talking point recitation/regurgitation on her site.

    Same IP, multiple commenter names.

    Naughty.

If this is the kind of fumbling internet-rookie bullfluff strategy the Shilleristas are going to employ, this is going to be a cake walk.

  12. I vote for IrishPirates new nickname. Impeccable logic on Farinas

Yo, maybe that person will decide to strike out on their own, and publish a website not affiliated with the Shiller campaign called WhatTheCappleman.com

Then Shiller can mention it on TV and see how it helps the campaign... (though they will be forgotten if they can't keep the same name. IrishPirate is...well, IrishPirate. Wouldn't accuse of him of being nayone else.

  14. IP,

I am here! I had determined that I would never want to degrade myself to the level necessary to be an alderman in the City of Chicago, but you have challenged me and I love a challenge. Alvin Greene? Anybody?

The machine is powerful IP. You have awaken a sleeping giant.

  15. Heh, JP,

I highly doubt that the noobs who think that spamming comments sections with easily debunked identities (and even more easily dismantled talking points) have the technical wherewithall, or the political savvy, to pull off a website.

But, hey .. let 'em try.

  16. Lots of speculation regarding Molly’s time in Uptown.
I know Molly has lived in the neighborhood since 2005. She’s been a beat facilitator since 2007. So I don’t think she just moved here to run for alderwoman.
