"I was on my deck getting the grill going and I heard some yelling on the street. One man kept on yelling something like kids get out of here. He yelled it a couple of times. Next thing I know, someone pointing a gun and fired 3 shots...it looked like he pointed it north up sheridan or up in the air. I couldn't tell b/c I started to duck behind my grill. I did see the 'fire' from the gun. I called 911 and the cops were on the scene fairly quickly....at least 5-7 police cars patrolling the area."

  5. I guess a warm day during a long Chicago winter is not a thing to look forward to anymore. At least someone had the goodness to warn kids to get out of the way???

  6. I live on Sheridan. Guy who works across the street said a (the) gunman fled south toward Sheridan and Sunnyside and went into the dollar (type) store there. I believe that's where he was apprehended.

And he also says that the gun wasn't recovered.

  11. I shall attempt to avoid any sarcasm here.

The cops have been out hot and heavy the last few days. I walked Broadway from 4000 to around 5300 yesterday and went home on Sheridan and the po po were everywhere.

They must have been expecting trouble.

I don't see any reference to anyone being injured or killed so at least we can be glad of that.

  12. I hope the guy that saw the shooter talked with the police and agrees to be a witness for them. While this blog is terrific for keeping us all in the loop about activity we also need to be willilng to help the police. If he stayed behind his grill and said nothing, why bother writing in with details.

  13. I wonder... was Nathaniel there? Cop Watch? I hope those shooter(s) got a good hug.

  14. I really appreciate that I live in a community where people don't all just accept the status quo.

It would be easy to say, "Those are just gangbangers. They do it every year when the weather gets warm. They'll do it again." In Uptown, however, people don't all say that. Many, many people work on their own and together to find ways to reduce crime.

It would be easy to say, "Every community has crime. My community is no different. I'm justified in my not getting involved." In Uptown, however, people do get involved.

It would be easy to say, "There are more important things in life than trying to make things better in my community." In Uptown, people value making things better in their community.

The core community values in Uptown have shifted dramatically over the last several years. Thank you, neighbors, for making hope a reality.

  15. I was the person that sent the email about grilling and witnessing what happened. I saw the shooter from the 8th floor of my condo building. The shooter was basically a shadow to me. The only thing I saw were the flashes of light from the shooter's hand. I did call 911 and the operator asked for a description but there was no way I could provide one.

  16. Zesty, not only has the involvement shifted positively in the last several years, but also in the last several months. I've noticed how this community has become more physically active out and about and not just on line. I am so grateful to those who have gotten up and gotten out to make Uptown a better community. There is lots and lots of justification for doing nothing and we are not letting those justifications get in the way of real action. I, too, would like to thank all of you for being darn good neighbors.

  17. Cowbell, even if all you saw was a shadow it was a shadow with location, weight and height. It may have even had a decipherable gender. All of this information given to the police could, potentially, be helpful. And a citizen willing to stand up and be heard is a major asset to this community.

  18. Chuck - if I could have given a description, I would have. I was watching from well over 100 feet away and ABOVE where it happened. And yes, I did give 911 the exact location of where the shooting occurred. Anyway, when I saw the fires shot, my first instinct was get down...and it wasn't to get a description of the shooter. If you think I should have put the community by trying to get a better description of the shadow in front of my own safety, you are insane. AND if the police want to contact me, they are more than welcome to.

I cannot believe you are being critical of a concerned member of the community. If I wasn't concerned I WOULD NOT have called 911 nor would I have let UU know.

  19. Cowbell,

I think that you are taking more offence at Chuck than is warranted. It's clear that you did inform 911 and the police as soon as possible, I think his point was more that people often write off incomplete information they have becuase it isn't complete, while the lots of little pieces can be put together from interviews from cops.

Take his last line "And a citizen willing to stand up and be heard is a major asset to this community." as a direct compliment - you did the right thing, nobody is asking you to get closer or take pictures at your own risk. From another resident, thank you for responding appropriately and immediately.

  20. It would be nice if the CopWatch folks actually captured a shooting like this on their cameras. Purely by accident of course.

I wonder what they would do with the tape?

I think I know the answer.

  21. Too bad the police did not do society a favor by showing them the impact of bullet.

I noticed increased scumbag activity near Sunnyside and Hazel around that time.

Let's continue to frequently call 911 to report any suspiscious activity.

A lot of credit for this heightened community involvement should go to the anonymous founders of UU.

Instead of being delivered subpoenas, they should be delivered official kudos from the powers that be.

    Thanks, UU.
