Numerous Shots Fired On Kenmore This Morning

We have heard from several neighbors in the area of the 4800-5000 block of Kenmore that are reporting around 6:30am this morning numerous shots were fired. Police were seen patrolling the area searching for the shooters.

  1. This is seriously getting out of control! What can we do about this?!?! Posting comments on a blog is great for dialogue and debating the issues, but it isn't enough. Supporting fixwilsonyard.org is great, but it isn't going to fix what we have going on in our front yards today. If anyone has any REAL and Effective ideas. I, for one, would like to know and will fully support it. I'm at a loss.

  2. Alley between Kenmore and Sheridan in that area was quiet at 6:10am. No one was around on Argyle either.

  3. I'm hearing from 2 other sources of the shots as well. Anytime between 6:30 and 6:50 am today.

What can we do? We can get better descriptions of people doing bad things.

It's amazing all the things I see just looking out my window. I still contend there are too many people that are content to close their blinds and go back to watching TV at night.

  4. When are we going to visit Hell on Carmen? Maybe she will bake some of her famous magic brownies for us.

  5. This woke me up too. It wasn't normal gunfire, it was semi-automatic. I am familiar with guns, so I know what one sounds like. I also heard a car screech away, but when I looked out my window, I didn't see anything. I heard it again a minute or two later, muffled, as if the shooter was farther away in the car.

    It was rapid fire -

I spoke to one of the officers patrolling, I couldn't help him because I didn't see anything, I just told him what I heard, but it was so loud it sounded like it was outside my bedroom window.

My alarm works fine gang bangers... but thanks for the wakup call! I prefer a hot cup of coffee and a morning snuggle from the dog though.

  6. This is not in my nature to say things like this, but I'm so pissed about everything going on. I have a funny thought:

We should draw a map with Hell's address on it and a caption that says, "Free drugs!" and post it all over uptown.

I know some people won't be able to read it, but at least the one's who can will start knocking on her front door. And who knows? ...maybe actually really score some while their at it.

  7. Are the gangs staying out later or getting up earlier? I hope the new camera at Winthrop/Lawrence helps.

  8. I live on the top floor of the Sheridan Grande and thought I heard gunshots this morning. After the 3rd time, I went to my living room window but from my vantage point couldn't see anything. I couldn't believe my ears so I figured I imagined the whole thing (it was rather early). Now I know I was right. It was definitely semi-automatic - very rapid fire. Thanks for the update!

  9. The post and comments indicate the 4800 - 5000 block of the alley between Kenmore and Sheridan. Does anyone know how far north it was? Was it in the 4800 block or 4900 block or 5000 block? Pretty important to know, since 6:30 in the morning isn't a ridiculously early time to begin your commute.

Heck, what is Shiller's price to keep the neighborhood as she wants it? One dead body last Friday. She can't even comment on her website? Even the people that she's supposed to be the voice for can't possibly feel safe right now. Can't she do anything positive?

  10. I am starting to loose faith in our law enforcement. I have been behind them every step of the way, but it seems to me they are lacking basic investigation tools.

Is Jody Weis that bad? I have seen such a down turn in moral and in service since he took over.

Are the public defenders in this town that crafty that we can't throw a thug in jail? Maybe it is time to switch the public defenders with the DAs?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I am closer to 4900 Kenmore.. and it sounded like it was right outside my bedroom window. It scared the living crap out of me.

  12. Is Jody Weis that bad? I have seen such a down turn in moral and in service since he took over.

Well, from what I read on Second City Cop, which I guess is an accurate gauge of how cops feel since they're posting anonymously, they're becoming reluctant to do the "preventative" measures to reduce these kinds of incidents, like rousting gangs of people hanging out, stopping suspects on the street "just because", etc. because they fear being sued, accused of racism, profiling, etc. and of Weis and City Hall not having their backs in the event they're sued. Plus they point to manpower shortages, so they're pulling back a bit.

  13. So, if you're at about 4900 North Kenmore, farrell, then it's just a mere 40 yards or so from the shooting last Friday afternoon, right? Or, are you closer to 5000 block of North Kenmore? (Sorry, not seeking your address, just trying to see how close it was to the last shooting).

  14. Here are my thoughts on what to do

    1. Recontact our area Congress men and women. They seem to be the only one responsive.

    2. Mayor Daley MUST start to be held responsible for this. He gave Helen his endorsement in the last election. He is absolutely responsible.

    3. March on Helen. Heck, march on her office workers homes too. We all pay their salaries. And as they do not want to meet with us, let's meet with them.

    4. Start pressuring local businesses that have contributed to Helen's last campaign. They are also responsible for her re-election and we must make it clear they will be held responsible next time.

    5. Start calling the local news outlets, whether it be TV or Newspapers. If we do this in a concerted way, they will start to pay attention.

    6. Start calling the Chicago police headquarters and ask to speak with the Chief of Police. Again, he is responsible for crime in Chicago.

    ...just my thoughts...

    ReplyDelete
  15. You are correct... I'm on Sheridan and Ainslie. The shooting last Friday was on Sheridan, so about a block behind me, and another block South. So yes, near that shooting too.

Also right where the shooting was a few weeks ago on Ainslie and Sheridan, that ended up getting finalized on Kenmore and Lawrence that night.

Seriously, I've seen/heard more action lately than my husband's friend whose in Iraq right now. Jeez!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ok, I just railed on the CPD but I must add this...

I did see a police officer at the corner of Montrose and Clarendon this morning handing out school supplies to kids. While this doesn't make me feel better about the shootings and lack of arrest it did put a smile on my face.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sorry, correction - I'm on Kenmore and Ainslie. Not Sheridan and Ainslie

  18. Has anyone ever pulled up the list of government employees hired by Helen and paid for by tax dollars and done a criminal background check on them?

I am starting to wonder if we have an Alderman Troutman situation where perhaps some members of the staff have a very 'close' relationship to gangbangers..

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't want to make wild accusations, or assumptions either in regards to Shiller and her staff. But I've never been in situation like this where people are getting murdered (and many attempts at murder) are being made, and the Alderman and her staff have zilch to say. It makes me wonder why?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Can someone pull a list of local businesses that supported Helen's campaign? I would love to draft a letter to send to businesses each time something like this happens, with the line, "On such and such day, shots were fired at [address], ___ feet away from your business." Tell them that the there has been no response from the Alderman, and ask for their help in bringing about change to make our neighborhood safer.

    ReplyDelete
  21. For one,Hell's chief of staff (ball bat toten mama), Denise Davis, has kids with rap sheets longer than your arm.
Can someone post the address for Weis?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Farrell - are we in a situation like the movie "Dave"? Does Helen really exist, or is it a stand-in we're seeing?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm starting to think she's a card-board cut out.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I understand that Police Officers are upset with Jody Weis, but they have a job to do. Just because I don't like my boss doesn't keep me from doing the job that I love. If they do not want to do their job because of their boss, they need to find a new line of employment. It is our safety and lives they we are talking about here.

I for one have more faith in the police and hope and pray they took the job because they want to make a difference in their community and not because of stroking they get from the powers that be. Otherwise, they should not be policing our streets. It's a tough job and they have my respect. God knows I would not want to be in their shoes when dealing with these repeat offending thugs.

Remember that it is also the Judges and Parole officers who keep putting these criminals back on the streets. Corruptions runs thick in these neck of the woods. I'm taking the initiative to learn who these people are and voting against them during the next election. I suggest everyone do the same and maybe someday we will make a difference. Peace out!

    ReplyDelete
  25. ... sorry, just to continue my earlier thought... I just used gmaps pedometer and figured out that the shooting this past Friday was about 160 feet from JJ Peppers, and I know they had a Shiller sign for at least part of the last election. Do you think this is compelling to business owners, or not?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Chip & Dan:
I attended the last Area 20 CAPS meeting. We were told that on the previous night the tactical unit and gang unit went out and arrested 4 people. One of them had 35 arrests, 7 of which were felonies. He was on parole and busted for selling drugs on Sheridan. We have to look beyond the police and to our politicians otherwise we can't possibly win if they are being released faster than they can be arrested. I know the cops are frustrated too so maybe we can get their backing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I say boycott the businesses that contribute to Helen. Something tells me the "bad apples" are many of the businesses best customers.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I hate to break up all the Shiller hating that's going on. But I live on Argyle and Sheridan and when I looked up my ward map it appears that this exact area consists of both the 46th (Shiller's) and the 48th wards, it is a very odd configuration, so some of the violence and shots are happening in her area and some are happening in Eugene's. This is also right on the edge of two differnt police districts. Lawrence is the southern edge of the 20th district.

I am getting really upset that this crap keeps getting closer to my house. It appears that whatever war had been going on has moved closer. I had been seeing a lot more police presence during the summer, but haven't seen nearly as many officers in marked and unmarked cars in the neighborhood over the last several weeks...Perhaps that's part of the reason for the bangers moving closer. Regardless, it's out of hand.

    ReplyDelete
  29. again, I ask, where is the Mayor's voice and influence? He did, as a reminder, endorse Shiller..

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's time for that follow up meeting with Harris and Steans, not much has changed since the first one.

Maybe the mayor would like to attend also. But he's probably got soemthing important to deal with like bringing the 2016 Olympics to his violent city.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am as frustrated as dan. This just seems to get worse and worse and all I hear is "stop complaining, it's not as bad as the westside" from cops.

I would love to stay and do something about this, but I am at a loss as to what I can do that is effective that isn't going to cost me my life.

Right now, my general thought is to avoid being outside and as soon as I can to sell my place. As much as I love it, I can't stand it anymore. And before someone calls me a yuppie newbie to Uptown, I've been here a decade. It has never been this bad.

    ReplyDelete
  32. And before someone calls me a yuppie newbie to Uptown, I've been here a decade. It has never been this bad.

I keep having to point to the CHA's "Plan For Transformation" (which was implimented when I worked there about five years ago). When they torn down all of the high-rise and some of the low-rise public housing, it took a while for the troublemakers who called that their base of operations to regroup. That's what's happening now as they reformulate and battle with the folks (no pun intended) who were already here. While the warehousing of the poor created horrible conditions, it did sort of centralize the gang problems. And with the gangbangers and their families being send to heretofore untouched areas, this is new territory for everyone. How do you handle it when the gangbangers have been released into "general population" so to speak?

    ReplyDelete
  33. On Harris and Steans, stick with Harris. I think we're going to get much more attention from the Harris people than we will from the Steans people.

The Steans people need to get out more.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm surprised to hear this defense, but I hear it all the time. I'm told the problems here aren't as bad as they were four years ago.

What? Is this supposed to help me? What's the purpose in telling me my worries are exaggerated because four years ago when I lived somewhere else the situation in Uptown was worse than it is now?

I presume you're trying to tell me that the situation is improving, but that I just might not know how it is improving.

If you are out there making the argument that Uptown is better today than it was four years ago, PROVE IT. Show me the money. I really need to to see something.

  35. I just emailed a Harris staff member to alert him to today's happenings and ask for an update and a meeting.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I emailed Steans and Harris last friday after the shooting. Still waiting...

Also, I think we should have one more march before the summer ends. Lets see if we can get 500 people to do it this time. Lets make it BIG. I know, some haters will say it will not fix anything, and maybe it won't, but if nothing else we do it as a symbol of what we will take and what we won't.

    Just a thought...

  37. I heard them right around 6:40, peeked up north and saw nothing, but a schoolbus outside of St. Thomas of Canterbury...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Did anyone attend the CAPS meeting last night? I was working but am curious if they discussed the recent shootings.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I was at the 2311 CAPS meeting. I forwarded my notes to Uptown Update.

They did discuss the recent shooting that resulted in three victims, one of which was fatal.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hmmm.. This is the Uptown I moved into 12 years ago. Nobody came out of their houses unless they needed food or had to go to work. Walk fast and watch your back. Yes, it sounds oddly like Baghdad.

  41. What we need to do is get creative in the way we draw attention to our plight. Maybe a letter writing campaign to the IOC detailing the crimes in our neighborhood and others....clearly stating that Chicago may not be ready to host International athletes...as its having a little trouble protecting its own residents. Start hitting the Mayor where it hurts...and hopefully he'll put more pressure on Helen to get her bad apples under control. How can she do that?? By LISTENING TO OUR CONCERNS!!!

We've got a lot of really smart people reading this blog...now we just need to figure out how to use our talents and skills in a way that will get us what we want. Protests are great, but what else can we do? Let's try using our imaginations a bit....

    ReplyDelete
  42. per wilsonrez' comments: that's a very smart idea. I'm not sure how to go about selecting the right people to send letters to but hinting that Chicago isn't ready for the Olympics, even in 8 years, b/c it can't protect it's own citizens would definitely get the Mayor's office's ear flags up. Anybody know who would be the most productive target for said letter writing campaign?

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't live in Uptown anymore (I guess I'm a chicken), but I feel for the whole community. I already left a message for Hellen, and now I'm going to call the news media and Daley. I am so disgusted by the gangs.

  45. how about flood the "Why Chicago?" video channel for the Olympics bid with videos about uptown? "Why Chicago ... if it won't address resident concerns about Uptown murders ..." etc. It's a start and might appeal to the Irish Pirate.

    http://chicago2016channel.com/submit-your-video/

Or start posting them on YouTube.

Not a substitute for letter writing and other formal actions, but just throwing the idea out there.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think that YOU TUBE videos are a great idea. Perhaps some footage of the locations of the numerous shootings this summer (including the murder of an innocent college student steps from her office) and then even trying to take a camera into her office to request a meeting. There is no law prohibiting anyone from recording public space.

  49. Has society - or at least society in Uptown - abandoned the idea of legalizing drugs as a way of getting the criminal element out of business?

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm all for legalizing drugs but the knee jerk reaction is that would be an awful idea.

I realize it has its hazards, but it's not like things are going great now...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Legalizing drugs will not alleviate the buyers who will lie, steal and kill for money to support their addiction. We need federal support to cut off the supply from the source. Alcohol is legal and so is sold, without discretion to people with a substance abuse problem, which they then drink, pass-out and/or urinate in the streets, alleys and parks - especially in Uptown.

    ReplyDelete
  52. If we're going to organize a protest/demonstration/march, let's start nailing things down. How about a march from JJ Pepper's down Sheridan and over to Broadway and Ald. Shiller's office? Wednesday (9/10) we could do something at 6 pm since her office closes at 7 pm, and that conveniently coincides with the 6 pm newscasts. That would give us time to publicize the event for residents and send out press releases, too.

    ReplyDelete
  53. The Argyle Winmore Block Club has requested Shiller, Smith and Boehmer to attend a Block Club Meeting.

    Date: Wednesday September 10, 2005
Location: The Synagogue (5029 N. Kenmore)
    Time: 7:00 pm

    Topic: Crime in our neighborhood

I'm going to this meeting. I'll let you know who shows up, and what was said.
