John Dillinger Day In Chicago

The Uptown Advisor, a service of Friends of the Uptown, is alerting its readers of this event with recent, and not-so-recent, Uptown connections:

JOHNNY DEPP AND PUBLIC ENEMIES did much to add to the historic nuances of the PORTAGE THEATRE during recent filming there. The set design crew enhanced parts of the theater's renovation with some Hollywood magic and some hard work.

Depp's portrayal of notorious bank robber John Dillinger included scenes inside the PORTAGE, which was recast as the auditorium of Chicago's BIOGRAPH. We have to say that the PORTAGE auditorium is looking fine!

With the Dillinger story in mind, both fact and fiction AND past and present collide at 4 p.m. this Sunday, July 20, when "Manhattan Melodrama" screens for the historic ticket price of 25 cents at the PORTAGE. This is the last flick Dillinger saw before he walked outside the BIOGRAPH with his lady in red and was assasinated by federal agents. It stars Clark Gable, William Powell and Myrna Loy.

The best-dressed "lady in red" will win a prize at the PORTAGE!
