Uptown Business Spotlight

Those residents who complain that there is not enough retail in Uptown have surely not been to the "Wilson Broadway Mall" at the same intersection. We've been in several times and are amazed at the things you can buy there. We came across used computer monitors, used televisions and electronics, a small booth that sells nothing but used shoes, and several booths that sell ethnic music and DVDs for every taste. You can also pick up clothing with clever sayings such as "Warning: Pimp Zone, All Violators Will Be Bitch Slapped." The ambiance is enhanced by the music that is played at high levels to add to your shopping experience. For those of you who want to check out "Uptown Update" while you are shopping, you can take a quick break and visit the "Internet Chat Room" to surf the web. We sadly noticed many empty booths in the mall and we can now add these to our "Vacant Storefront Showcase."

  1. Who knew Uptown had such a surplus of used computer monitors and "pre-owned" shoes? The hidden treasures in this neighborhood continue to amaze me :)

  2. I wonder how many of these used electronics were obtained in burglaries...

  3. So I'm a little confused now... In one post you complain that there are too many vacant commercial sites and then in the next post complain about the stores that do exist? You know, I understand that downtown Naperville has pretty much full commercial occupancy. Perhaps you'd be happier there.

  4. Personally, I don't have any problem with a legitimate business that caters to a poor clientelle, but I would like to see some options for me, a middle-class resident, as well. Unfortunately, retail is probably more segregated than residences in Chicago.

But I must say that I'm tired of people saying "move to the suburbs" any time people show a desire to improve the neighborhood from it's long stagnant nasty condition. Just admit it, Thomas--our retail options in Uptown are lacking, and it's time for some change!

  5. Yeah, Thomas, unless you've purchased pre-owned shoes and used computer monitors from those stores in the past thirty days, I call a big ol bullshit on your disingenuous comment.

I don't even think you believe your post and were just looking for something snarky to say in response to a blog that you don't agree with.

  6. I only disagree with the elitist, whiny, dismissive parts of this blog. The rest is pretty cool.

  7. Well Thomas, you didn't answer, when was the last time you shopped a the Wilson Broadway mall?

Are you too elitist, whiny, and dismissive to give them your business?

  8. I suspect the reason Thomas hasn't answered is because he knows his accusations of elitism and "suburbanism" (if that's a word) are, at least in this instance, baseless and borderline ridiculous. He's all snark and no bite.
