Chicago, IL – "Ald. James Cappleman (46) endorsed Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot’s reelection campaign on Saturday, according to Uptown Update – a local blog reporting on news in the Uptown neighborhood. A former teacher and social worker, Ald. Cappleman has served the Uptown community since his election to the City Council in 2011. Ald. Cappleman is a member of the Chicago City Council LGBT Caucus, and has spent his career fighting for people experiencing homelessness, domestic violence victims, those living with HIV/AIDS, as well as greater access to mental health services.

“Mayor Lightfoot has cleared pathways for equitable and inclusive growth on an impressive scale,” said Ald. Cappleman. “Her signature initiative, INVEST South/West, is helping to rewrite Chicago’s ‘tale of two cities’ narrative for the better. I believe that her focus on mitigating deeply rooted poverty and providing previously overlooked South and West Side communities with job opportunities, affordable housing, and greater resources will aid in reducing crime and increasing quality of life. While Mayor Lightfoot has worked tirelessly to improve this city, Congressman Chuy Garcia only offers vague platitudes with little substance on what he’d do differently. With her proven track record, I’m proud to endorse Mayor Lightfoot for four more years of leadership.”

“Ald. Cappleman has been a champion for his community in Uptown but has also been a fierce advocate for social justice issues that affect communities across Chicago,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “He has spearheaded invaluable work to address homelessness and public health issues in our city, which includes co-founding Chicago’s first homeless shelter dedicated to providing care for people living with HIV/AIDS. Ald. Cappleman has also been committed to increasing access to mental health care for Chicagoans, which has been a priority of this administration as we emerge from a global pandemic. It’s been a privilege to serve Chicago in collaboration with Ald. Cappleman, and I’m honored to receive his endorsement for my reelection.”
