CHICAGO – Ill. state Rep. Harry Osterman (D-Chicago) said Aug. 16 that he is leaning strongly toward running for the 48th Ward City Council seat being vacated by retiring Ald. Mary Ann Smith, who's held the seat since 1989.

“I've been talking to people about the issues facing the ward and getting a lot of feedback that's been very positive,” Osterman said.

Osterman's mother held the Edgewater-based seat before Smith and there's been a great deal of speculation about an Osterman candidacy in the February 2011 city election since Smith announced her plans to retire at the end of her term. Continue Reading

  1. I can certainly understand his wanting to run for the aldermanic seat, emotional value and everything, but ...

If I had donated money for his state campaign, had gathered signatures for him, had believed in his vision for representing me in Springfield, and/or had discussed his legislative future and what he would stand for in the Illinois House with him, I would feel duped and pissed off.

I wonder who'll be appointed to be state rep in his place. Because God forbid that Illinois voters be given a choice and an open election!

  2. So what are the other choices for the 48th? For the past few election cycles, it seemed to be as one-sided as some south side wards (no where near the possibility of change as the 46th experienced over the past 2 decades).

What kinds of groups or coalitions serve as an alternative to the Osterman/Smith machine?

  3. SORRY FOR THE CAPS.
MOST OF US IN THE 48TH DON'T CONSIDER HARRY A "MACHINE". HE CARES ABOUT THE ENTIRE WARD, THE PROGRESS AND SAFETY OF THE ENTIRE WARD AND ALL RESIDENTS OF THE ENTIRE WARD. IF HE DOES RUN, I AM SURE HE WILL GIVE IT GREAT THOUGHT AND WILL BRING HIS VISION AND DETERMINATION FOR CHANGE TO THE WARD AS HE HAS IN THE HOUSE. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK AT WHAT HE IS DOING ON THORNDALE. THAT'S HARRY'S DOING, NOT MAS. THINGS IN THE 48TH WILL CHANGE FOR THE BETTER AND NOT REMAIN STAGNENT. BRICOLAGE'S ARE GREAT BUT MORE CHANGES NEED TO BE IMPLEMENTED. HARRY WILL BRING THAT BECAUSE...HE LISTENS...WHAT A CONCEPT.

  4. I think another run of the click will be counter productive in the 48TH ward. Osterman never weighed in on Queen Mary Ann selling out the meters. Osterman is the problem. The entire ward wants some fresh ideas.Osterman and his gang knocked off a couple of nice guys by the name of Chris. The old style Daley machine politics is dated. OUT.
