A Reminder To Call 311, DHS Needed

A reader sends in the following photo and info:
"So, I take the red line most days to go to the gym and hop on the last couple cars. And every day, I notice that the loading dock behind the building just north of the "Just Tires" store (between the Lawrence and Argyle stop) has at least 5-10 "guests" who have spent the night. The accommodations are complete with blankets, pillows and a place to stash their personal belongings. Sorry the pic is a bit fuzzy."

UU Note: When you see scenes like this around Uptown, please call 311 and request that the Department of Human Services (DHS) send out a van to interview these folks so they can get help and into a safer situation.

  1. FYI, at the risk of being called politically incorrect...this is also called Trespassing so the Police can also be called.. its not like there arent enough shelters in the area...

  2. No, it's not trespassing. That's why it is titled 'Call 311, DHS Needed".

  3. If they are on private property, it is trespassing... geesh

  4. Unless you own the property and are willing to sign a complaint and go to court, it's not trespassing. That is why the post is titled "Call 311, DHS Needed".

  5. Now you see how this plays out in Uptown. Call the police? They'll say it's not their job because 1. it's none of your damned business to make a complaint if you don't own the property 2. they don't have to protect private property (that would be 95% of the property in Chicago.)

So the police know they are there and know they are trespassing but have found their "out" to avoid having to take any action.

Next they'll tell you to call the Building department because as far as they are concerned it is not their job and it will never be their job - until they start the building on fire with one of their campfires.

Now they could be proactive and contact the building owner and ask for the owner's blanket permission to shag these guys off the property as is done for parking lots all over the city but hell, why do any work in Uptown?

  6. Tripp and dennis have it right. And if you think this is bad, try looking out at the back entrance of the old Alpha electronics store sometime before 6am. I've never smelled so much pee and weed.

    And I'm in college.

  7. I have photos of homeless people camping out behind Helen Shillers office.

When 311 comes out to interview these homeless people, I bet most of them will decline going to a government run facility.

The sad truth is that government run facilities mix violent criminals and junkies with the poor and defenseless.

Government run facilities are human warehouses administering meds. The criminals, junkies and homeless know how this system works and they take full advantage of it.

People running these facilities know about this racket too, but they don't say anything because they need a job.

    RACKET!

  8. Truthbearer is right. I called the cops on the homeless we see from our home across from the vacant maryville building. Homeless hang around there to sleep, drink and do drugs. I went out to meet the cops and they told me it is private property and I cannot call as only the owners of this property call fill out a complaint and drove off. Western & Belmont station cops that always park and hide behind the empty building early mornings waiting for the shift change.

  11. While this goes on Daley and every alderman waste time trying to stop law abiding citizens from having guns.

  12. ummm. I couldn't help but notice that two posts down on this blog was one on "pet rescue." The feel of these two posts seemed quite different. The day we began to treat certain human beings like our pets in Chicago will be glorious.

  13. Oh Sam, pleeeeze... When was the last time you saw pets boozing it up and living life on the streets because they preferred a good high rather than a good meal and a free bed, which they could leave each day and return to each night?

  14. @ Truth. LOL. Never of course:) But in reality it's much more complicated than you make it out to be. These people have addictions (as we all do) and they need a place that will deal with the greater root problem, not just a good meal and a bed. I understand that we cannot force people toward dealing with root causes. However, the annoyance you heard in my post was toward my observance in Chicago with pets and the seemingly lack of concern for human beings on the same level. This being said I just moved from Old Town to Uptown and Old Town is known for rich women making out with their puggles and spending way to much at their doggie day school:)
