Takin' Care of Business and Working Overtime

We noticed that Broadway was completely closed off to vehicular traffic between Wilson and Leland at 11pm on Tuesday night.  It seems like the work on the new L is now going around the clock.  A reader sent in this photo and says,

"I have a clear view of the Wilson Red Line from my apartment window, and wanted to give an update on just how quickly that project is going. It seems like the crew works all night during the week. I just took the attached pic. It's 11 pm on Tuesday and the crew is hard at work! I could probably go without the loud banging sounds or blow horns at night, though..."

We didn't get any notice from CTA about this, so no idea how long the 24/7 work will last. We'll reach out to our CTA contact and see what we can find out.

  1. Has anyone noticed that since construction - and the cold weather -- that there are no crime reports -- like shootings? And when I walk that way, I don't see the derelict people all over the street. Maybe it's the weather.

  2. Sadly you are incorrect Lianna. The bangers are everywhere, and crime has not taken a holiday. There have been shots fired , although not as frequently as in warm weather, but still present. The derelicts are there. They pee and poop in the station house( hidden by a plywood board). the CTA employees look the other way, but God forbid you ask them to do something as you will then get the evil stare down like you're the devil. Yep, I said it, the CTA employees are not intelligent enough to thwart crime.

  3. Heh, they're all camped out under Wilson and Lawrence. It looks like a garbage dump under the viaducts.

    1. Yep, looks like Calcutta under there. I'm glad the poverty pimps felt inclined to protect their rights to camp freely on public property, because that will solve their problems for them...

    2. I'd really like to see the alderman take care of that issue. It's absolutely inhumane to allow people to live like that.

    3. Absolutely agree. It's a ridiculous situation that needs to be fixed.

    4. at a minimum, tent cities should not be allowed in prominent PUBLIC areas. It is bs that folks have to walk on the road with their kids to get to the lakefront because the tents, booze, filth etc. block the right of way on the sidewalk. that right there should be enough to have them cited or locked up. The lakefront is what makes Chicago and having that be the first thing the residents of and visitors to/through Uptown see, simply reinforces perceptions of our neighborhood. I get tired of seeing that every time I use LSD or want to go on a bike ride. It is not Cappleman's problem to house these people, but it is his problem to get them out of the public way. To house them goes beyond Cappleman and is not only Uptown's problem. Think how fast this would be addressed if these folks moved their illegal encampments to Lincoln Park. I guarantee you the city would find a solution and would not stand for it. Cappleman and us residents need to stand up.

    5. I feel like I've done my share of contacting aldermen in both the 46th and 48th wards, 311, 911, calling the local precinct, and both the Chicago Park District itself and the Margate Park Fieldhouse manager. None of them seem to care. I'm not sure what else to do, but hope other people are also calling and demanding better conditions for all people in the neighborhood.
