Don't Mess With The Reservoir

A reader relates another incident of Uptowners not sitting idly by when crime takes place:

"[Thursday] night while dining at the Reservoir, I witnessed an attempted theft. Two young men ran by and stole a cell phone off a table on the patio. A staff member there ran out the door chasing after them. He threw at and hit one of them with a beer can that was meant to be served to a table, then changed directions to run the opposite way. He cut the 2 guys off and while running full speed, kicked the guy's feet out from under him that had the stolen phone. The guy went flying out onto Montrose and I could tell he was hurt.

The Reservoir staff member picked the phone up and returned it to the customer on the patio. He was greeted with clapping and cheers when he returned. I hope that other punks will think twice about messing with this place. The Reservoir staff guy is a veteran and a badass, but asked that we not use his name on Yelp or Uptown Update, but was very nice about the situation. I bet he made a lot of $ that after all of the witnesses were shaking his hand and clapping."

We assume the cops were called at some point, and we bet those guys won't target The Reservoir anytime soon.  We also caution you about leaving phones and wallets out when eating al fresco, anywhere in the city.

  1. While this story turned out good, the employee put himself at considerable risk. These "phone thieves" could have had weapons & used them. A phone, cash, purse,ect.. is not worth ones safety.

  6. booooo americanlt, i say catch the punk. i certainly will not sit by while someone commits a crime right in front of me. matter of fact, the thieves better watch out for residents like this shining example because we are SICK and tired of the thugs and gangbangers thinking Uptown is their 'turf'.

  7. A handful of years back I was a student in the south loop right after the iPhone came out, and a man tried to rip it out of my hands on State Street. I maintained possession, but chased after him when some bike cops saw me. We followed him into the subway, they stopped the red line, and drew their guns, but he had gone down the orange/green transfer tunnel at Roosevelt and got away. They gave me the same warning as americanIt. It's good advice, but if someone wants to be a vigilante in this way to protect their neighbors, I'm not going to say no.

  8. Yeah, this sounds like a cool story until you think about what could have/should have happened. I didn't read anything about calling 911 or anyone being arrested. Kudos to the staff for doing what they felt was the right thing to do but I would not recommend it.

  9. Choose your fights wisely. Know when to hold, know when to fold and remember that crime and violence is their livelihood. They fight and hurt people on the daily. That is their profession. I'm not saying we should sit back and get victimized but don't let this story give you a false cape and "S" on your chest.
