Probation For Pigeon Lady

Interesting day in court.  Ald. Cappleman posted to Facebook:
"In court today, the woman arrested for feeding pigeons (would throw many bags of bread and rice at a time) agreed to stop feeding all birds and is doing 30 hours of community service at the Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary
If she breaks her agreement, she will face the same judge who will up the ante to get her to stop. I then agreed to drop the battery charge, but will have the charge reinstated if she breaks her promise to the judge.
The goal is to have this woman direct her attention to birds in a more positive way. Maybe she'll become a great volunteer for the Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary. They can always use the help."
We hope this is a wake-up call and a solution. We really don't need the bird droppings and rats that are attracted to the massive amounts of food she leaves.

  1. Interesting and positive solution. Put the onus on her. I hope it works out.

Here come the naysayers in 3....2....1..... =]

  2. This seems like a fair and intelligent way to redirect this problem into something positive. I hope it works out. It will be nice to walk over in that area without pigeons swarming overhead. Thank you!

  3. @Ray, let me be the guest - besides her "feeding birds" - hasn't she assaulted several other individuals in the neighborhood? This is more about feeding birds...and yet another loon is set free in Uptown.

    Tick Tock Tick Tock

  4. dropping the battery charge ftl

  5. Alek -- Not dropping the charge. Putting it on hold. It's her decision whether or not to act in a manner that will get it reinstated.

  6. I get it but this lady clearly incapable of turning her life around (as evident by countless encounters, previous charges, etc)...this sure smells a lot like the slap on the wrist nonsense so many around here vent against our judges for.

  7. That community service at the Bird Sanctuary should help her. But maybe she need mental health treatment also? C4 is in the neighborhood.

  8. "I get it but this lady clearly incapable of turning her life" When I hear things like this, I don't know who is worse. People like the pigeon lady who clearly need serious help. Or people in our society who think the only soloution to crime is to lock everyone up and move them out of sight.

Great job Alderman Cappleman, hopefully she gets the help she needs and finds that she can help birds in other ways not detrimental to our neighborhood.

  9. This is a positive step however I believe there is another bird lady in our midst. This one has an accomplice. Twice, I have seen a 50 some year old asian woman parked at the corner of Winthrop and Ainslie. A gaggle of feeding birds are eating rice on the sidewalk. Adjacent to this is has this woman standing at her car trunk with open rice containers with her mving around the open containers. She then drives off with a white 50+ yr old driver. I confronter her this Monday @4:45PM asking if she is feeding the birds. She denied it but the circumstantial evidence is pretty clear. I've taken her license plate down in case I see this activity again. Anyone else see this duo?

  10. Great! Now lets get the other bird lady whom I've spotted twice at her car on Winthrop and Ainslie. I've witnessed her (asian/50+ yrs old) "circumstantially" manipulating open rice containers in the trunk of her car while a gaggle of birds are feeding on rice all over the sidewalk (that was not there 5 minutes before). I've seen her (and her 50 + year old driver) active in the behavior before and this past Monday around 4:45pm I've confronted her asking if she is feeding the birds. She denied it. I've taken her license plate number down just in case. Anyone else see this duo?

  11. Guylicious I have seen the 50+ Asian lady/and the 50+ driver waiting in the car feed the pigeons at the Walgreen's parking lot at the corner of Wilson and Clark. They are a menace to society and Uptown. Next time I will get her license plate number and complain. Basically she dumped a huge bag of seeds and old bread and drove off like a getaway car, but I didn't see any rice. They know it's wrong but think they are helping the birds. They have no respect for the laws, don't care about the germs they are spreading and the mess they leave behind. None of these bird people do.

  12. You are reporting on the same person, the Pigeon Lady.
She has an accomplice who drives a gray Prius.

Please post if you see her doing it again.

  13. Does anyone know if the bird seed is dangerous to our pets? My poodle like to eat all the bird seed.

  14. So basically, she already violated her probation?

  15. Guylicious and Christine, there's only one Pigeon Lady *thankyouGod* -- she is an Asian lady who carries bags of bread and rice to various places in Uptown.

Her day in court was Tuesday. As we understand it, she is forbidden for a year from feeding birds anywhere in Chicago, and must do 30 hours of community service at the Jarvis Bird Sanctuary in Lakeview. The hope is that her obvious love for the birds will be channeled in a more positive direction.

If she breaks the terms of her probation, battery charges can be reinstated against her and she will appear before the same judge.

  16. @Caring Neighbor

Unfortunately, there is another lady feeding the pigeons. Today when I got off the L at Lawrence, there was a woman spreading bread in the parking lot on the north side of Lawrence next to the tracks. She is definitely not the same one from before.

  17. I guess the power vacuum must be filled. There was another pigeon lady WAITING in the WINGS so to speak. Hahahaha! Wow. I guess this is the primo spot for a pigeon lady to be.

  18. OR more likely this is just the PROXY for the pigeon lady. It sounds like the pigeon lady is a force to be reckoned with and if the pigeon lady has someone that drives her around it sounds like she is good at bossing people around.

  19. Perhaps these characters are really members of some kind of secret society, like Free Masons or the Illuminati and pigeons are one of their sacred symbols..

  20. Rice is actually bad for birds. If they eat too much, and it then expands in their belly to dangerous proportions. . . . .

  21. ... great. Just what we need, exploding pigeons.

  22. I just saw the pigeon woman feeding pigeons by the Lawrence red line stop, and I was under the impression she was under court orders not to do that. I called the police but by then she had gotten into her accomplice's car (grey prius) and left. The police said to notify them if she cones back. Anyone else I need to inform, or is this the best I can do about this for now?

    1. Nevermind, I emailed the Alderman's office. I did let them know I have a time stamp of the incident and location if necessary

  23. An alert to readers of UU. I saw Kang Young's driver in a dark grey Prius (IL license plate 333-9178) with loaves of bread in the back of his car. He was tearing up the bread and placing it in bags. He told me he was doing this because he is Kang's friend.

If you and one other person see Kang Young scattering bread anywhere in Chicago, call the police (at least 2 witnesses are ideal) and tell them she's breaking a court order. Please call my office with any questions (773-878-4646) or email us at info@james46.org with any questions about this matter.
