Still Sheathed

How long has the Riviera (4746 N. Racine) been covered with this white tarp? According to this post, it was August 2008 when wire mesh and the tarp were installed on top of the theater, presumably because the terracotta was in bad shape.

Does anyone know when work will resume on this almost 2 year old project?

Fun Fact: The Rivera Theater is owned by Jam Productions, the same company that owns the still-shuttered Uptown Theatre (also covered in the same white tarps).

  1. FYI..this is in the 48th Ward..if Alderman Smith can put a Ribfest between Leland and Lawrence, certainly she can make sure that JAM Productions does not continue to visually pollute Uptown with building diapers... PLEASE call her office and ask for answers.. we need to keep her accountable too..

  2. Building "diapers" seem to be a way to put off basic maintenance indefinitely! The city fines condo buildings if their facades aren't maintained properly. Commercial structures get a pass..............

  4. Uptown SuperHero, this is in the 46th Ward. Forget about holding Helen Shiller accountable. Let's focus our energy on just getting her voted out.

  5. UptownSuperHero, the Riv is in Helen's Ward. Jerry Mickelson says Helen is easier to work with than Mary Ann. Yet, the Riv has been crumbling, with no repairs in sight, for two years.

See this map for clarification on ward boundaries.

  6. I believe the Riv is in Mary Ann Smiths ward as is the Borders south of it. Helen's Ward starts at the El tracks on Broadway. But in true Chicago fashion her ward goes farther north on other streets. This is a big part of the reason why people do not even know who their Alderman is!

  7. No, UV, if you check the maps, you'll see that the Riv is in the 46th Ward. Racine is the dividing line. Borders is in the 48th because it's across the street, on the other side of Racine.

On the other side of the block, the dividing line between the wards is the el! So Borders, Uptown Broadway Building, and Bridgeview Bank are in the 48th, but cross the el tracks east of there, and you're in the 46th.

  8. It seems like Jam Productions does not care at all about preserving theses unique historic buildings. The Riv has been tarped for nearly 2 years with no sign of any work being done and the Uptown Theatre just sits there crumbling as it did under old ownership. It seems to me like the only reason Jam Productions bought the Uptown Theatre is to prevent any competition from coming into the area.

Unfortunetly if something is not done to the Uptown Theatre in the next few years it will crumble beyond repair and have to be torn down and the Riv will not be far behind. Thanks Jam Productions!
