Ald. Shiller Attends Lawrence House Tenants Meeting

The tenants of Lawrence House held a meeting Thursday evening, and a reader who was in attendance sent us this photo.  We'd love to hear the explanation for the illegal conditions there, including the lack of functioning fire alarms, no emergency evaculation plan filed with the city, even though it was due in 2006, and 46 code violations.  Yes, it's the fault of the management and ownership that the building is so far out of compliance, but who dropped the ball and didn't follow up to ensure that a residence filled with the elderly and ill is operating within the law?  We hope that the situation is remedied, and fast.

  1. hmmmmm

Perhaps Shiller will run for reelection.

Don't want a building full of pissed off seniors.

  2. Looks like she is in the middle of another one of her long and complicated explanations...

...of why no one is ever held accountable for poor management in Uptown.

  3. Which leads one to wonder if the Alderman's office is not requesting enforcement of building codes. Someone's definately dropping the ball here.

Think what kind of loss of life there would have been if the last fire had been a serious fire.

Shame on Ald Shiller and shame on the City of Chicago.

  4. IP,

Hm, indeed. She sure is putting a lot of effort into her quad-rennial improvement schedule.

Imagine if she presented this type of interest during the other 3 years of each term.

Meanwhile, Wilson is still a hole, and the mother of a 1 year old child has a scar in her leg.

Oh, and Francis Oduro is still dead.

  5. This would be great. Please run Helen. Or one of your staff take the reins and go for it.

Her days are numbered and the masses aren't happy. Compliments of the years of shotty ward planning and the arrogant disregard for the half of the ward residents who aren't on public aid.

    Adios Shiller.

  6. But wasn't it ascertained earlier that Lawrence House is NOT in the 46th Ward? And if so...where was Ald. Smith?

  7. Lawrence House is in the 46th Ward. It was predominantly senior housing, but I heard many of them are now leaving because the crime happening inside that building.

  8. "Compliments of the years of shotty ward planning and the arrogant disregard for the half of the ward residents who aren't on public aid."

Helen Shiller wins everytime people make comments like that because she can turn around and use it to turn this into a class and race war. Shiller needs to go and it will take the effort of people of all works of life to get her out. White, black, brown. Money or no money.

I really dislike Helen Shiller but comments like that are one of the reasons why there is little to no unity in this neighborhood. Do you have something against people on public aid? You sound like a insecure person who doesn't like living around minorities or poor people. I hope that isn't the case. That really is a ignorant, stupid comment that probably reflects who you are as a human being. You wanna help? Stop adding to the problem with dumb comments and start working to make the neighborhood better.

  9. Yo,

I am of the opinion that Shiller will run for reelection. Did I say run? Oops, I should have said "stand".

    Hoooooooo, I kid the aldercritter.

Shirley, I jest and your name ain't even Surely.

She has a nice 6 figure salary, good benefits, and the opportunity to take care of friends and family through her office and her campaign fund.

Plus do you really think she would walk away from the opportunity of the Maryville TIF. Mein Gott, think of the hundreds of no income housing units she could try to build there. It minds the boggle.

Time will tell. Personally I prefer she run because of my own twisted sense of justice and more importantly because she would be the weakest possible machine candidate.

Logically given the issues in this ward, the high property tax increases going to hit around November, and the general anti incumbent feeling out there she wouldn't run. Fortunately, people ,and politicians in particular, are seldom able to see themselves as others do. Hope over reality so to speak.

Run Helen Run. I'm still here and when you lose in February, or April if there is a runoff, a cackle will be heard from my rooftop deck throughout the city. Perhaps even across the lake to Michigan.

  10. Honestly, when I saw the photo above this posting, I thought it was one of those cheap "Last Supper" tapestries you see for sale in gas station parking lots.

  11. Josh, I think you have it wrong. Shiller is the instigator of the class warfare in this ward. She mobilizes people by making them fear "condo owners" (an uptown code word she defines as WHITE PEOPLE who want to take away poor people's housing. She did this for 20 years, long before 90% of these condo owners arrived on the scene. She originally opposed Truman College because it eliminated slum, but cheap, housing. Poor management and the developers to whom Shiller funneled zoning exemptions and received campaign donations turn a community "condo", not the hapless souls looking to buy them. And, those of us who have lived here awhile know that Uptown was filled with vacant lots just ten years ago, so much of the condo development did not displace a living soul, other than rats, rabbits, and other critters. Even when a building has turned from social service agency ownership to condo, it was the social service agency that did it by choosing to profit from the property or running it into the ground with poor maintenance or ownership.

Shiller's longtime war on condo owners is really just her racial attack using buzz words that the low income community members have defined for them as "White Folks" and which clueless lakefronters have no idea is happening to them. Shiller shamelessly plays to her lakefront constituents's "where will-they-go" concern for the poor while simultaneously stabbing them in the back by telling the Uptown poor that they are to be feared and hated.

Why has this gone on for so long? Because she owned and controlled the only newspaper operating in this area and outside media simply regurgitated her press releases and self-glorifying puff pieces. And, she gets a lot of funding from outsiders who profit by operating below the law in this neighborhood.
