Uptown Traffic Signal Problems

A contributor says:  "Department of Transportation crews are working at LSD and Montrose to locate and repair the high voltage power line break that is causing traffic signals to malfunction in Lakeview and Uptown. Crews say they suspect yesterday’s water main repair at Marine and Junior Terrace as the cause of the break."

  1. This should be fixed now. Actually, it turns out it was not DWM's fault, for those keeping track.

  2. But wasn't it the fault of the DWM's outside contractor who cut the line when the DWM supervisor was present early Tuesday morning? That is what the Transportation Dept repair guys told me at 9:00 p.m. last night when I drove by. ComEd showed up to work into the wee hours to get it fixed overnight.

What were you told was the cause?

  3. Well, yes the DWM did hit the line. It wasn't a Comed line either, it was a BOE line (Now DOE). The "outside Contractor" is a company that marks utilities pursuant to Dig notices. To make a long story short, they marked it wrong. DWM people followed procedures properly. I was kinda proud, they did it right.

Now, before everyone says that this outside contractor is some connected, clout-hired hack, that is not true. Part of their contract is that if they screw up, they pay for the damage. Thanks to some excellent, forward-thinking, problem solving public servants, it is the outside contractor's burden to prove to us that they marked the utilities correctly. (Per the contract.)

In this case, the outside contractor is reimbursing DOE for the damage.

99% of the time, thanks to the work of this contractor we collect costs from people who damage our utilities. It gets even better every day.

OBTW: We had a 7AM meeting on this. I just got home. We don't get time and half or overtime, and even some union guys were there on their own accord.

Point: Most City employees are dedicated public servants. Don't believe everything you read in the paper.

    I'm just glad its fixed.
