Spring Weather: Shots Fired

A reader wrote at 5:48: "3 shots heard at Kenmore and Winona. Cops got there right away, one guy in the ambulance. Cop looking for shells or something on the ground by Kenmore and Argyle. Feels like summer."

Update from Chicago Breaking News:  "Boy Shot In Arm in Uptown.  A juvenile was shot in the arm today in the North Side's Uptown neighborhood, Chicago police said. The condition of the victim, a male, was not immediately available this evening, but he was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. The shooting happened about 5:25 p.m. in the 4900 block of North Kenmore Avenue."

  1. SUMMER IS HERE!
    YAY

Why does this stuff always happen when me and the other hardworking citizens of Uptown need to make it home from work!

I hope the city was flooded, and I mean flooded, with 911 calls from people fed up with this. Where there is one, there is usually several, so keep an eye out!

    Be safe neighbors.

  2. Prolly shouldn't fire shots in front of a building complete with cameras linked to the CPD. Thanks for taking advantage of the warm weather, loser.

  3. Thanks for providing this info. I wondered what the police tape was for. This apparently happened in or at the building across the street from me. Lots of investigators were still on the scene when I arrived home at 6:30 and the police wagon is still on the corner now at 7:20 pm.

I hope the boy is okay.
Let's all look out for one another.

  4. Officer said boy was going to be okay. There was minimal blood on the ground, like if you had a bloody nose on the sidewalk. Police have also received the videotape from the building. The cameras have good range on Kenmore and Winona and the intersection there. Bad choice to shoot someone at all, worse choice to choose a building with visible cameras.

  5. Looks like the shooting gallery is open for business early this year. Thanks Helen.

  6. I got home at a quarter after 5. There were alot of thuggish-looking teenagers hanging out at Goudy. Some were just walking up and down Winona with swivel heads. Obviously, they looked like they were up to no good. I could tell that something was up. Little did I know....

So sick and tired of this!

  7. The next beat meeting for that area (Beat 2024) isn't until April 15th. Please make a note of it and be there to talk to the police and your neighbors about your concerns. 2024's Community Beat Meeting. Location: Margate Park, 4921 N. Marine

  8. The police did retrieve the video from the incident although it shows post-shooting events but at least it has all the players involved. Be very careful of these young "teens" African American and hispanic. They come from a building on the 5000 block of N. Kenmore. 911 was so flooded with calls that they ran out of police to dispatch and by the time the police got freed up, the age of the tickets were so old there was nothing the officers could do since the activity already moved on. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL out there, on foot or on bike. We have this going on now and this is BEFORE the CHA building at 5040 N. Kenmore opens. Helen, I hope you are watching, but probably not!

  9. what a shame. i was walking right around then on sheridan and leland and thought it seemed so nice and peaceful out. little did i know all the thugs were more north.

was the victim a bystander or was this a drive by or was this an accident?

  10. Wait, I thought hand guns were banned in Chicago?

Throw these bums out of office. It starts with Daley and works its way down to Schiller. The reason Schiller doesn't do anything is because Daley doesn't care.

Chicago subsidizes gangs by allowing them to stay in public housing at the cost to tax payers. We all know exactly where these thugs live.

  11. well folks, 'oversize white T shirt' weather is nearly here.

THIS should be the focus of the 46th Ward Office.....what's on the site now? 'Blue Cart Pick Up' info, and 'Day Camp' stuff.
Come on....we're moving into summer war zone mode already.

  12. You want to clean Uptown? Start with Wilson and Broadway! This intersection is a safe haven for those who have no desire to be civil, ever.....PERIOD!!!

Bingo ! We have a winner. Lets also include Wilson and Sheridan. Check the Clearmap, Crime Incidents, Beat 2312. Armed robbery/handgun and a sexual assault in the alley just north of there. Talk about predators !

  14. Actually this is on a ward boundary. In both helen's and mary ann's ward. They should both answer what they are trying to do to change the violence so close to the school.

  15. There were 20 people shot citywide as of 2100 hrs. last night.

  16. What is up with that area of Uptown? It is like a zoo over there.

  17. Don't ever expect Helen to put anything about gang violence on her website. Gotta remember that her ward includes some of Lakeview. She wouldn't want anyone in Lakeview to know whats going on up here...

  18. Funny thing this morning...I told my wife its a great day for her to take a walk with our 1 year old. Then I said, "just dont take him to any Uptown parks b/c the weather is nice for the first time...that means turf wars outside." I felt bad saying it as I care for the neighborhood, but I think Montrose Park is a better alternative.

  19. Really, Ken? That huge apartment building on Kenmore is going to be CHA housing? Terrific....when is it going to be ready by?

I really hope Kates Agency comes back to the area again. We really need them.

  20. Do we have a candidate to run against Schiller yet? It is time we clean up Uptown!

  21. "Do we have a candidate to run against Schiller yet? It is time we clean up Uptown!"

That question is yes. There will be many candidates running for Aldercritter.

Cappleman, Carroll, and Farinas have all publicly stated their intention to run. There are at least two others who may run.

The real question is whether Shiller will run. She can run, but she can't hide.

Here dose' steps behind you, Helen?

    It's "de feet".

  22. Angela and neighbors,

It's good to hear that calls go out to 911 AFTER shots are heard. HOW about before...living in Uptown, it's not hard to find somebody, somewhere doing something nearly all the time. Example:
group of youth standing around looking suspicious, potential gangbangers

-call 911 and tell them what you see and ask if they could send an officer over to the scene. They could be loitering, drinking in public, causing a disturbance. Insert whatever you like here, they are probably doing something. Point is, DO NOT HESITATE!
-I call all the time for people standing around drinking, it's public intoxication and/or drinking on the public way. (plus, I can't stand empty alchohol bottles, cans and containers all over our "hood", we don't live in a ghetto...)
    - Suspicious gang activity, I call on suspicious suspect or causing a disturbance or drug activity if you clearly see it.
-always say that you will sign a complaint and give very accurate discriptions.
-take pictures if you can and feel safe doing so.

We HAVE to make calls, that is our primary source of power in winning back our neighborhood, and we have to do it BEFORE things happen.

  23. Correction: Wilson and Broadway is "Hellon Uptown's" ward. She gets all the credit.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree with Action Uptown. We all write our complaints here and how we hate this time of year, but you MUST call 911 with any suspicious activity precisely when you see it. They say at the CAPS meetings, if it looks suspicious, it probably is. Loitering, drinking open alcohol, counting a stack of cash in public on a corner, seeing these same people using hand signals, seeing younger men and women hanging out outside the SRO's waiting around for their regular customers and/or mules...all suspicious.

  25. Of course Helen will be running again next year. It's a nice job for her. Of course Helen will win next year. She won when only one person ran against her. There are now going to be five running against her. Not enough people in the ward care enough to vote her out, especially with that much divide for her opponents. Uptown is way too apathetic for decent change. Same is as same will always be.

  26. 5040 Kenmore will be CHA Senior Citizen housing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Chuck,

if no one in the February election gets 50 percent of the vote + 1 vote then there is a runoff between the top two vote getters.

As for Shiller I want her to run. I want to see her whine after losing.

Right now I don't know if she will run agin' or not. I'm told "Not", but a pirate can dream can't he?

  28. Not sure if this is the best spot to post this - but regarding the comments about 5040 N. Kenmore becoming senior housing, it reminds me of a quote out of Jazz Age Chicago when the owners of Somerset wanted to turn it from a hotel into a sheltered care facility in the late 60's:

"The proposal provoked a firestorm of controversy as Uptown residents and community leaders contested the future of the venerable hotel. Led by Alderman Marilou Hedlund, opponents argued there were already too many sheltered care and senior care facilities in the neighborhood. "Is [Uptown] to become the community where people come to die?" asked one resident."

Sounds like an appropriate argument nearly 50 years later.

  29. The Cops Need to get out of the cars and start walking the area! I saw a group out right on Goudy campus gambling with dice Thurs night. Called cops...gee half hour later they show up. This goes on every summer. The cops should be PARKED on these streets. Gangs and shooting at a grammer school...WHAT COULD BE MORE IMPORTANT?!

  30. 'Butternut'

without question, Wilson and Broadway is the lowest of the low, in terms of the amount of trouble points.
When someone can't even walk the streets when the sun sets, that's an issue.
    Helen....can you hear us?

  31. Miss Kitty -- great post. Funny that the alderman actually cared about her constituents!

  32. I am really bothered by the building at 5040 N. Kenmore becoming all section-8 senior apartments. It seems just as one obstacle, like Somerset is solved, another one immediately takes its place. The Police are already warning residents in this area about the potential crime problem that building could become. It is the same situation we are seeing now with The Lawrence House except this one is directly across the street from me. Something must be done to stop the ridiculousness!
