Carry A Sign At The Rally

(This post is pinned to the top of the page until Saturday morning. Please scroll down for any new posts.)

The Anti-Crime Rally is just around the corner!

To recap, we'll meet at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 7th, at 4544 North Broadway, in front of Ald. Shiller's office (and across the street from the spot where Francis Oduro lost his life to gang violence last month).

Please come to show that Uptown's residents are sick of the shootings, the brawls, and the murders, and that we want -- and demand -- safety on our streets for every single person who lives in and visits our community.

We encourage you to carry signs or placards to show how you feel, in case there's media coverage. You can make your own, or download one or several from this page.

Flyers with the details of the event are here. There's still time to distribute them to your friends and neighbors. We encourage you to ask stores in the area to put them in their windows or put a stack on their counters.

Enough is enough! We demand safe streets. Please come to the rally to make your voice heard!

  1. I just happened onto this site today, and I will now be reading it every day! I knew our public official was completely inept at this point, but I hadn't realized how bad it has become and how little she seems to care. Let's keep our 'hood safe and clean and our government transparent and working for ALL citizens!

  2. I will be there in spirit on Saturday...I hope to read all about it!

  3. I have personally put over 75 fliers in doors, etc of my two block area. I sure hope others are doing that today as well.....

  4. Come to the rally, Andy!

  5. Hi Everyone - we should have signs that are POSITIVE and on message. Please refrain from anything that bashes others. It will only make us look bad and it's not helpful.

  6. i'll will bring a bad apple sign

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'll bring the kool-aid and lemon squares!!! Yipee!!!

  8. Yes. The rally is in front of Shiller's office. However, at all costs, avoid any and all signs with her name on them. It's not about Shiller. This is about the 46th ward, the 23rd police district, and ALL the people that live, work, and learn here.

I'll print and post fliers in my building tonight. It will catch the eye of all the tenants as they arrive home from work and school.

Truman College is right in the middle of the chaos. The next generations come here to learn. This is a tremendous community asset. To see that there are no more victims like Francis Oduro, that chaos must be addressed.

  9. TARGET'S COMING!

At least they're confirming that they are in negotiations at Wilson Yard...

  10. "Oh Hell, if someone wants to bring a sign pointing out Shiller is an ass, let them"

If you make it about Shiller her political operation will spin the rally as a political protest and not the anti-crime rally that it is. If her political outfit can get Trib Media to cover a 5 person COURAJ event without a hint of notice to the public imagine what they have prepared for Saturday's event.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Guaranteed that there will be some shenanigans on Saturday. Be prepared.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Just an FYI --

Hours before the public meeting regarding Wilson Yard at Truman a few years ago, "someone" posted phony notices all over the neighborhood saying the meeting had been postponed for a week.

Of course, it had not. It was just a way to discourage the residents of the area from attending the meeting.

Cute, huh? This is the level of dirty tricks that exist in Uptown with the splinter groups.

Be prepared for anything. Because (rolling eyes) everyone knows that a rally OPPOSING MURDER ON THE STREETS OF UPTOWN is really, really bad and really, really wrong. And it's racist and discriminatory and anti-poor. (rolls eyes some more)

At least, an anti-crime rally is hugely scary if you have the screwed-up ethics, morals and paranoia of the idiot splinter groups around here, who are so terrified of change that they attack anyone and everything associated with it.

  13. Sorry, but I am not intimidated by Shiller and it is dishonest not to say the reasons we have this crime is because of her and her supporters. You just made my case with using Couraj. People here are so intimidated. Why? Isn;t it time we just said what we want to? I am not nearly P.C. enough to care.. it is about her... period.

She never shows up at CAPS meetings, Block meetings, etc. If I have the opportunity to say what I am feeling, then as an American citizen, I am obligated to do so. Why be afraid? She panders to the other side. Guess what, they are going to vote for her next time too.

It is time we made sure all those that are unaware of her destructive legacy, whether new to the neighborhood or not, have the opportunity to learn the truth. Let us begin to truly concentrate on what the real problem is... Shiller = Crime hmm, that may just be my sign!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Anon 1:53. It's not about being afraid. It's about stopping Shiller from using political jujitsu against us. If we make it about her, it will completely mess up the message we want to convey. Avoid the temptation of making this about Shiller in any way, shape, or form.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Are you going be waving your anti abortion signs 2?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I do not understand why you wish to divorce the two subjects. They are completely related. For over 20 years she has used intimidation and worse to get her way. The problem is not those that vote for her. That is their absolute right.

The problem is educating those 20k registered voters in her ward that did not even vote in the last election. It is, in my opinion, our obligation to energize and educate those that did not vote for whatever reason to do so in the next election.

I feel passionate about this. And I believe that is a positive attribute.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I agree with 1:53...this is ALL about Shiller and it's time to stop fearing her like colin does. Let's call a spade a spade (or a Shiller a Shiller) and stop being so damned politically correct.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I have to play the "old timer" card on you. Colin is spot on. This is an anti-crime rally. Those of us who have been around the block a few times are speaking from experience.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The goal here is to highlight the fact that the residents of Uptown will not tolerate this surge of violent crime; nor the growth of gang activity in our neighborhood, near our businesses and most importantly, near our schools and children.

Since our alderman has made no statement in response to the shooting murder which occurred across the street from her office, we feel it necessary to bring those issues to her doorstep and demand that she fulfill her role as a public servant and serve the public.

We need to hear what plans she has; what steps she's willing to take and to find out what we can do to assist.

Turning this into a lynch mob would be counter-productive.

Like it or not, we need her in order to gain any level of success. If we give her excuse to ignore us, then what?

Let's start off on a civil footing and see where that takes us.

The fact that a large group of her constituents are willing to go to her office on a Saturday, alerting the media and anyone who will listen, is in itself a testament against her.

The fact that we've seen people who are known political allies stepping up their pro-Shiller rhetoric this week, is a testament to the fact that she's aware, unhappy and a bit nervous about the fact that she's going to have to answer to us, at a time, and on a stage of our choosing.

While not as dramatic and tantalizing as a full-on confrontation would be, we're having an effect. And that's the best we should expect, right now.

If we go in civilly, and she responds in kind, maybe we can get something done about people being shot in our streets.

If we go in civilly, and she does not respond in kind, ie - not showing up or sending her known political allies in to start trouble - she exposes herself.

We cannot be a belligerent mob, and we cannot react if a pro-Shiller trouble maker wants to start a ruckus.

Civility is the key, and we must retain the moral high ground or we will be easily dismissed as the uncouth rabble-rousers she professes us to be.

Having said that (and forgive my long-windedness, again) - I will be video taping the whole thing in HD.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Can't make it, but will be there in spirit.

Props to everyone who will be a part of this. It is very inspiring to see how much people really do care about this neighberhood.

Too bad our elected officials don't share the same concerns.

    ReplyDelete
  21. People, don't cut your nose off to spite your face.

Is Shiller a huge part of the problem, of course. But don't let your righteousness undermine this event. What, do you think turning it into an anti-Shiller rally is going to lead to change? Has it at any point in the past? Be smart politically. Let this be an anti-crime rally. Let the reporters ask the question why the rally is happening in front of the alderman's office. Give them the hook of citizens of all stripes wanting safety. Don't let it be spun as just political gripers.

I realize many will never make peace with the fact that Shiller is the alderman for another 3 years, but that's reality. Frankly, I'm interested in safety and a better neighborhood, not defeating her. If she gets embarrassed by all the attention and wants to act like a typical political schill and latch herself to our efforts despite never having done anything in the past, I'll put a lid on my desire to call her a hypocrite and just be thankful that I'm getting the results I wanted.

(Of course, it's be nice if Shiller made peace with the fact that we were her constituents, but that's a whole other story...)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Here Here 3:47 and 4:14! Well stated.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You can't blame Shiller for everything and all you people are doing is fueling the divide every time you make every issues or situation her fault.

This is why she has won election for all these years.

Frankly, I think my vote for Cappleman was a mistake in the last election and I am glad he lost.

You all should save all this energy and put a good challenger up against her the next time.

It's just like demostrations against the war they don't do any good.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If you think Shiller is the problem, wait until you get a load of how the media spins this event.

It only takes one jackass to make us all look like idiots in a 10 second soundbite.

    ReplyDelete
  25. If the media is there, I think it would help if someone new spoke to them, as long as that person is not a raving Shiller hater. Katherine Boyda is great and has done wonderful things for this neighborhood, but every sound bite/news clip I have seen shows her. Again, she is awesome, but if it is only her everytime, it looks like she is the only one disgruntled - which is far from true.

I don't even know if Katherine is attending tomorrow, which I hope she does, but just a thought.

I hope no one is offended by this comment.

    ReplyDelete
  26. No one should act as a spokesperson for this gathering. We are all meeting as individuals to express our concerns about the increased criminal activity and the recent homicide. Those should be your talking points.

The media will be seeking out the most outlandish statements so make sure you don't provide them with fodder. Let the Couraj folks make fools of themselves
with their silly fliers. Let's take the high road and be professional.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The Rally is the lead front-page story in this week's issue of Inside. The article paints the community in a very good light.

The article also ends with the standard, "Shiller’s office did not respond to a request for comments about the rally."

  28. I'm not "scared" of Shiller. Far from it. But I know how this game is played.

Dealing with people like Shiller is like getting out of quick sand. You flail around and you sink deeper. You move with planned, deliberate actions, and think it through you can get somewhere.

  30. If everyone could please get on their various online social networks this morning to spread the word about the rally this morning, that would be phenomenal.

Please make sure as you pass our neighbors this morning, you remind them as well.

    UPTOWN, DOWN WITH CRIME!

    ReplyDelete
  31. We called several friends last night and are hoping a volleyball team will join us too. The support of people, even outside the Uptown area, has been phenomenal.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I like that: UP with UPTOWN, DOWN WITH CRIME!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thank you... please remember to bring your camera phones, etc so we can record and shenanigans the other side tries...nothing like great YouTube moments to reinforce your point!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Pretty good turnout at the rally. I'm curious what the cop who pulled up to the curbside said.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes - very good turnout - Lets keep this going. Did you guys see the Wilson Yard workers walk over too (they stopped working)....Ok bad joke, but thanks for setting this up.

    Stankie20

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks to all the neighbors who came out to this event! We're off to a good start making out point that we are not going to let crime, gangs, and drugs take over this neighborhood. Even though Shiller wasn't there (beach house, anyone?), she won't be able to avoid us forever.

Just remember what was said at the rally: call 911 if you see something suspicious, make a presence in the neighborhood, and keep updated through Uptown Update, BP Neighbors, and the Uptown Crime Blotter.

@11:01 - still laughing at your WY joke. :-D

    ReplyDelete
  37. The cop at the rally said Shiller called the police at 8am to make sure Cappleman and his partner did not enter her offices! What the hell?!!! Are they not taxpayers and citizens as well? I hope that gets in print somehow...

    ReplyDelete
  38. A ALDERBEAST SIGHTING!!
As the community marched in front of her office, Hell-en was in 1/2 block north in front of the "Wig and Hair" shop on her cell phone.

    ReplyDelete
  39. If that is true, she was probably talking to her staff inside and documenting which "bad apples" were in attendance.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The guy with the baseball bat in her office was a little over the top. We're against violence, not trying to start it. Not everyone erupts when they get mad like our little Mt. "Saint" Helen.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Does anyone happen to have a photo of Helen talking on the cell phone in the wig shop when the rally was going on? It would be priceless!

    ReplyDelete
  42. TAXPAYER FUNDED WARD OFFICE OR TAXPAYER FUNDER SHILLER POLITICAL OFFICE?

That Bad Apple with the baseball bat sitting behind the Ward Office counter at the desk where Helen Shiller should have been was not a 46th Ward staff member.

Nope. He was George Atkins, Helen Shiller's longtime campaign manager.

You can find his information in her campaign D-2's:

Atkins, George & Sara First Decade Consulting
    2636 Evergreen
    Chicago, IL 60622

    ReplyDelete
  43. TAXPAYER FUNDED WARD OFFICE OR TAXPAYER FUNDER SHILLER POLITICAL OFFICE?

Given that this is a taxpayer funded ward office, did Shiller Political Campaign Manger George Atkins and Aldermanic Office Chief of Staff Denise Davis have the right to tell persons who quietly came into the office after the rally to ask for a 46th Ward brochure to get the hell out of the office unless they tossed away the sign that they were holding down at their sides and not even displaying? Did they have a right to deny providing brochures that were freely given to all other persons who did not participate in the rally?

Isn't that a denial of goverment service based on a violation of Constitutional free speech rights in a taxpayer funded office? Just asking.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Mt. "Saint" Helen.

What a perfect description of the Alderman Helen Shiller Alderbeast.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't doubt that the Alderman was busy, busy, busy making calls. As I walked to the rally from my parking spot east on Wilson, East of Broadway, I could see a poor police office sitting in her car at the corner. Her cell phone was ringing off the hook and she was speaking to someone.

I then saw her drive up to the rally members as I arrived. She appeared to tell them that they had to get further away from the street. She probably was taking orders from the Shillerbeast inside the store across from where she was parked. Who cares? There were so many people there it really couldn't make a difference.

    ReplyDelete
  46. And let's take a moment from blogging to remember what is really important - Francis Oduro and his suffering family.

    ReplyDelete
  47. And let's take a moment from blogging to remember what is really important - Francis Oduro and his suffering family.

NO, it's not about Francis, It's about Cappleman vs. Shiller and those that are pissed she won the election.

    ReplyDelete
  48. So that rumor about her being at her beach house wasn't true? I kinda thought it was too good to be true but it did make me laugh. What was the big flippin' deal about the whole thing? Why hide? She's been to plenty rallies in her day. Everyone was pleasant and just trying to do something...anything...to say that we care about this place and the people in it. Yeah, people are angry at her but I would have really liked an opportunity to have talked about what has been done since the murder and what, in her opinion, is the best way to move forward. I am not a bad person. I can have a civil conversation. Why hide out? Why be nasty to the few people who went into the office? When you act like that how can a conversation ever begin?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh, please 11:15. I live in the 48th ward and I can't even vote for either one of them. That is not why I went to the rally today. People can deal when their candidate doesn't win. That is life. What they can't deal with are politicians who feel that they have no duty to listen to or represent the interests of the people who didn't support them in the last election. They are still the area's constituents. They still deserve to get representation AND taxation for cryin' out loud.

The more you kid yourself that "sour grapes" is all that this is the more you will keep growing increasingly out of touch with this interesting and vibrant community.

    ReplyDelete
  50. To Anonymous 1:15

What a mean thing to say. But from what was said, I guess we know it was the Shiller people who said it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. huh? there are two anon 1:15?

    ReplyDelete
  52. "And let's take a moment from blogging to remember what is really important - Francis Oduro and his suffering family."

the loudest voice in our community right now is the deafening silence from the Alderman's office. anonymous said this is about shiller. you bet it's about shiller. her silence is unacceptable.

if this lack of response from shiller is how she feels about an innocent college student from ghana being killed, just imagine how she feels about the rest of the constituents in her ward. if her sense of compassion is not strong enough to break the silence, the outrage of the people should. you can't have it both ways unless injustice is a way of life for all of us.

the clear message you get from alderman shiller is that the "bad apples" should just keep quiet and accept injustice lying down, passively and obediently accepting a lower place in our world.

i'm sorry, but my conscience just won't let me do that.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I go to Michigan quite often and would love the opportunity to stop by her summer home sometime. Does anyone know exactly where it is?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Did anyone notice the window signs?

46th Ward Alderman Helen Shiller --
    Community Service Office

Now that is an oxymoron if I ever saw one.

    ReplyDelete
  55. It was great taking part in the rally this morning. If nothing else, it felt awesome to know that I am not alone in feeling that things need to change. Let's keep up this positive momentum!!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Perhaps we can start doing a take on "where's waldo" to "where's helen"? Start posting when and where she is supposed to appear so we can start asking her questions at every opportunity?

    ReplyDelete
  57. LOL that George Atkins had a baseball bat! While I suppose that someone thought that was a prudent measure on behalf of Shiller's all-female staff---c'mon?!! Who the heck do they think we are? We're a bunch of unorganized pencil-pushers who hardly ever "take to the streets." I saw strollers and I saw leashed dogs not pepper spray!

LOL! Way to greet a group of people protesting against violence and murder---with a weapon!? This community has officially stepped beyond "polarization" and well into "absurdity"!

    ReplyDelete
  58. May I please address the elephant in the room no one has yet talked about... We had a great rally..and THANK YOU to all the attended.. we have all this positive energy...so....now what?

    ReplyDelete
  59. What a fantastic rally! I had brought 2 friends in the area that didn't even know who Francis Oduro Jr. was until today.
This is exactly what we need. More involvement and more exposure. This was definetely a step in the right direction.

    ReplyDelete
  60. It was a nice rally.

A good turnout, a pleasant chance to talk to neighbors, good opportunity to meet the new Commander who stoppedy by, plenty of police presence up and down the street, alot of thumbs up from passers-by, and no interference.

That is what making a community statement should be like.

Baseball bats? Is the Shiller crew nuts?

    ReplyDelete
  61. I actually wouldn't necessarily take any comments about "bats" and Shiller being down the street as the Gospel truth. Same about the beach house comments and the "cop said" comments. Lotsa goofy stuff gets said on blogs and people pass around rumors.

Personally, I thought I saw Shiller traveling down Broadway backwards on a unicycle while smoking a cigar and wearing a lime green Fez. Now it could be the hangover and effects of alcohol caused me to imagine that.

In any case it was a good rally, peaceful, and it had good turnout.

What difference will it make? I dunno. But at the very least a community stood up and said violence was unacceptable and remembered the murder of an innocent college student.

I am still waiting for Shiller mentioning the M U R D E R of this young man. Ooops, I forgot, to mention crime is somehow "bad". Better to ignore it and hope it goes away.

Keep calling 911. Keep vigilant. Keep working.

    ReplyDelete
  62. is it out of line to schedule a rally (at least) once a month? At least until we get a response from her or her office in reference to the violence?

    ReplyDelete
  63. I am the person that wrote what the police said regarding Helen's office calling at 8am this morning. There were 7 of us there that all heard the same thing. That, I promise, is true.

    ReplyDelete
  64. "she is an outright coward."

Just think how her staff feels, left to defend the office with a baseball bat...completely without her support. Maybe they will start to understand how we all feel and why this isn't just about the victim but about the Alderman too.

One disturbing thing I learned at the rally, as long as we are sharing this experience together...

There was a woman there who is a resident of the Miriam, which is supportive housing for formerly homeless women on Malden. She said that a bus showed up one night and the staff of the Miriam rounded everyone up, against their will, to get on the bus "or else." One of her friends had just come back from the hospital, having had surgery. This woman was still weak, but they forced her to go in the freezing temperatures on this bus with no heat along with the others. O.N.E. was sponsoring a protest in front of Alderman Mary Ann Smith's house. (not her office, but her house) On the ride there, someone explained to them what it was they were to protest. It was the protest of the Alderman's position on Senn High School. The woman from the Miriam said that she and the others were furious that they were used like this. In the past, when people have spoken out about being involved in things, they have received eviction notices so she was afraid to say too much more. I wondered what more could she say. What she said was plenty.

I have to admit that I had lost most of my respect for O.N.E. long ago, but this sealed the deal.

I really hope that social services who support them get word of this and stop funding O.N.E.. I don't imagine that forced slavery of the formerly homeless is what most of their funding organizations stand for. I know my blood is still boiling about it.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Perhaps we should start contacting those organizations, starting with the businesses, that support O.N.E. and start some boycotts! Words are good, loss of business is what gets there attention!

    ReplyDelete
  66. We should demand those involved with O.N.E., religious organizations, businesses, community groups, demand and investigation on that charge! Is this the type of group with which they want to be associated with? If true, perhaps we should start targeting them for protest as well...

    ReplyDelete
  67. Did anyone else notice the gang graffiti immediately across the street from Helens office on the wall of the bank?

    ReplyDelete
  68. "To deal with the worst set of circumstances, we’re requiring that everyone spend the money to do it in every circumstance, even though it’s not necessary in every circumstance..."

    - Helen Shiller, as quoted by the Sun Times on June 3. Although the quote was unrelated to our cause, it is relevant to her wishy-washy way of thinking. Classic!

    ReplyDelete
  69. See the link below for O.N.E.'s protest of Mary Ann Smith's home:

    ABC News Link

    ReplyDelete
  70. And that, Rally Attendee, is the real elephant in the room! Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Ask yourself why, after they were notified, did the Trib & the Sun-Times not show up? Sure busy day...blah blah blah. But there was coverage of the protest at Ald. Smith's house and the Couraj "police brutality" rally with only a handful of people there. Yet, when you have 100 people show up at City Hall to fight against a zoning permit by a public school. NADA... When those same people raise money and file a lawsuit against the city for lack of due process...NADA. When yet different residents hold an anti-violence rally even the college where the man went never acknowledged that the rally was happening or agreed to send some administrators....again, NADA.*

See what I am getting at? Nearly every local institution in this neighborhood (regrettably right down to faith-based ones and many businesses) are part of the "establishment." They are heavily invested in the status quo and therefore when anyone has a problem with local social service agencies or the local government there are few places to turn in order to get redress. Even though a lot of these organizations started as grassroots ones and view themselves as fighters of injustice---their understanding of that word only goes so far. They want to marginalize the people who went to the rally as "nuts" who are spoilsports because their candidate lost the election. NO. The "establishment" will ignore the growing movement afoot at their own peril. You can only call well-educated, socially-liberal and compassionate people nasty names for so long until it starts getting ridiculous---even for Uptown!

So, for those of us who want change, we need to commit to spending more time organizing because while individual efforts like today's are good it won't be enough to produce the outcome we are looking for. And, of course, this goes beyond elections and candidates...etc. It is about breaking down the divisions in this community once and for all and working together with residents across the board to forge our own future together.

*Of course I am not talking about the News-Star here. They have enough sense to know that this is an interesting story and they have been covering it.

    ReplyDelete
  71. The thing with these protesters like O.N.E. is that they are professional activists that are part of an activist network. You can be sure that more than 1/2 of the people at the Ald. Smith rally had nothing to do with Senn or the 48th Ward. They were bussed in.

At the Wilson Yard anti-development rally by COURAJ, they proudly stated in on an activist blog that they brought in protestors from 40 organizations across the city. An many of those organizations do exactly what the Miriam Malden does. They round up the usual suspects from low-income housing, plop a sign in their hands and tell them where they are going and what they are going to say OR ELSE. What B.S. funded by our taxpayer dollars funneled to these non-profits!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Yes, previous posters---This should be VERY alarming to citizens across this great city because did ya notice that Mayor Daley & the Children's Museum pulled the same thing with The Woodlawn Organization (TWO)?

We all need to pay attention to this and SO DOES THE PRESS!!!! (A-hem!!!) I am all for legitimate protest by real citizens even if they have been prepped by special interest groups that I don't support. However, I draw the line at fake dissension orchestrated by the powerful. On this issue, there is no such thing as the means justifying the ends. Shame on those who treat our democratic liberties so carelessly.

Bravo to the REAL citizens who spoke their mind today at the rally!

    ReplyDelete
  73. To the press this event was just another rally. To us it is a big deal because we remember just 7-10 years ago when we'd have events and Shiller's goons (Kaplan and Atkins) would be out slicing our car tires and keying our cars. Or, one of the Shilleristas would fall down on the ground claiming he/she had been attacked by a peaceful rally goer so that Shiller's Friendly Cop could swoop in and break things up and teach us a lesson.

Boy! Do I love this video age, digital cameras, camcorders, and the internet! It makes all the difference.

  75. PS---I consider O.N.E. as part of the "the powerful" even though their whole shtick is to claim that they are the voice of the voiceless. I have been searching for a word to describe them. Something along the lines of "intellegensia" (obviously that doesn't work) or "theocracy" (but that is not exactly right). What do you call a group that claims moral superiority to all others and pursues fascist methods to get everyone to fall in line---or else? If a word doesn't exist, one needs to be invented. Hmmm...

  76. I guess it is so unfashionable to support people labeled (by others) as "gentrifiers." I wish there were some real reporters or documentarians around here who actually had an imagination and didn't need to be told what to think.

    Chicago politicians.

  78. Ok, how about the next rally is at a place where gangs hang out. Fine and dandy that you brought it to Shitllers attention but how about the next one at Magnolia and Sunnyside of Clarendon Park? How about we hit the biggest crime spots and show the gang bangers what we will tollerate in out community. I don't like Shiller, but she is not the one shooting the guns. We need to reach the people who feel Uptown is there "territory". While Helen does enable, we need to take back our streets then our government.

  79. 6:55pm We walk by the Tattoo Factory on Broadway on our way to dinner at The Spot. 3 cops are sitting on the bench inside. One is smoking under the awning. Their car is parked in the alley. They are laughing and talking amongst themselves

8pm. The same 4 cops are sitting on the bench in the Tattoo Factory as we walk by after dinner. They are laughing and talking amongst themselves

Um, I guess all the crime problems in Uptown are solved. This is great news!!!

Sounds like a "Steak" Out. If I was a cop I wouldn't help either. Any mistake they make will end up on the Sun Times front page. Got to keep the civil rights to the un civil. Thanks Liberal judges.

    you poor thing.

  84. Let'em rally they are just young kids that don't understand gang bangers could care less and are not swayed by a rally.

The gangs will just work harder to protect their territory.

The only thing that stops violence is the Police. And that is their job. Last time I check Shiller wasn't on the police force.

Today they had to spend time watching the stupid people rallying instead of doing actual police work and keeping my streets in Uptown safe. Good work kids!

But I guess that young people do that are from the burbs. They believe in false ideals.

  85. The only thing that stops violence is the Police. And that is their job.

Ok. So why were they hanging out inside a longtime Uptown business rather than walking the beat? How did that happen?

the rally was lame and useless

Maybe. But don't you realize that some of us knew that going in? We're not so dumb to think that we could hold a rally and *poof* all crime is gone forever. That is is where your comment "it did not accomplish anything" is so very, very wrong. It accomplished momentum and we all know that is what you are afraid of. So, you'd better keep coming back and trying to fight for ways to keep this community exactly the same (and exactly how you want it). We could all try working together for change, but I guess that would be too radical of a notion. And, I feel good that when an innocent man was gunned down on our streets that I did something to say "no, I can't abide with that!"

    ReplyDelete
  86. Well said!!! You've got to be a pretty lame person to put down an anti-violence rally. I mean, come on, how much more negative can you get?

  87. "The only thing that stops violence is the Police. And that is their job. Last time I check Shiller wasn't on the police force."

Ever heard of Martin Luther King? Gandhi? The Dalai Lama? Were they on the police force?

Are you really that dumb? Seriously?

Maybe I am out of touch, I don't know but I feel people not policy makes change in a community.

Keep up the good work UU, and to all who went to the rally today, thank you.

  89. That rally was useless.

Name ONE neighborhood that has been changed for the better because a small group of disorganized fools stood in front of an alderman's office for an hour on a Saturday morning.

You people are clueless...the gangbangers are willing to break every law and would just as soon kill you as look at you, the politicians are so deeply entrenched that they feel no need to respond, and the cops are all on the take for drug money, so they spend their time monitoring traffic problems and domestic disputes...and yet you think your "rally" is going to change behaviors. It's laughable.

  90. "the politicians are so deeply entrenched that they feel no need to respond"
I'll agree with you there. Daley's digging the trench and Shiller's hiding in it.

  91. My friends,

I think it is completely unacceptable that well over 100 people protested crime and the murder of an innocent in this city, and neither the Tribune nor the Sun=Times have anything in the paper this morning about the rally. I would really like to HIGHLY SUGGEST we take it another step and email them and demand to know why... Is the fact Daley has another granddaughter really more important that a neighborhood in fear? (Top local stories of both papers this morning)

I have provided the names and email addresses of the editors below. Please take some of the same energy you show here and email them, asking them to explain their editorial decisions on why they chose not to cover it...thank you

  92. Anon 7:58,
Just curious if this rally wasn't effective, why would you bother to state it on this message board. Is it out of a pure motivation of wanting to help? I hardly think so. You're adding to the problem rather than helping.

    ReplyDelete
  93. To the people videotaping at the rally:
Please send your video to the media!

    ReplyDelete
  94. I think a lot of people post on this board about the stupidity because:

    a) They aren't Shiller supporters
    b) Are old enough to know that you can't blame Shiller for everything
    c) Understand that the kind of things posted on this blog only make it harder for someone to step up before the next election to run against her
    d) Understand that James Cappleman is not the answer
    e) This empowers Shiller more
    f) You all demand respect from her but you talk out of your butt about how corrupt she is but can't prove it
    g) You also spread false rumors about companies such as Midway Moving running guns
    h) Know that all neighborhood in Chicago have crime and problems you just don't seem to follow those hoods as much to understand that
    i) This is a City and is not Mayberry,
    j) You complain about lack of business but then bash Target
    k) Say the housing at Wilson yard is Cabrini Green because it doesn't follow HUD standards yet HUD standards aren't he only standard. And you only got that from JC spouting his mouth off about that and his best practices bs.
    l) When the land in Uptown becomes more valuable to build market rate apartments, rehabbed condos or new one that will happen. Shiller doesn't control the US Economy or Uptowns.
    m) Boystown was a very rough area of Lakeview at least I can remember when it was.
    n) As was the North/Clyborne area of the City until all the younger professionals moved in.

    etc, etc.

You seem pretty upset about the rally; enough to keep posting here.

We can only hope your Queen Shiller feels the same!

HUD has guidelines on the building of low income housing that was created based on research of what works well. CHA understands that and also follows those same guidelines for new units. You can dismiss best practices for housing, but you have little to stand on when you do, as does Helen.

If the Wilson Yard housing component is so wonderful, where is the research that supports it? Where is this type of new housing being built elsewhere in the city? in the state? in the country?

  97. 10:36...I am not a Shiller supporter and agree with all of your many points (actually I only got half way through the list because I had an A.D.D. attack, but what I could complete reading I agreed with).
