Two Steps Foward, Two Steps Back

Our loitering friends whose favorite hangout has been the guard rail in the parking lot of Dearborn Grocers near Broadway and Montrose have since moved a few feet to the west and are now hanging out in this doorway. When 911 was notified of their new hangout, the dispatcher said, "Oh there are always people loitering there, we will send the police over." Nice.

  2. Too bad they're doomed to a life of hopelessness because there are no social services around to help them.

Oh, wait.... there are OVER A HUNDRED just around the corner.

  3. I love to see when people post negative remarks on here about these people, I am not defending them because I do get distrubed when I see people loitering and not doing anything productive. These are same people that would ask for money if they cross your path so that we can contribute to their behavior. CALL THE POLICE, CALL THE POLICE. There are not to many people that would take the time to contact the police in addition the has anyone tried to contact Dearborn and address this issue directly with them, let me guess no.

  4. I sent Helen Schiller an e-mail OVER A WEEK AGO regarding this situation and did not receive the courtesy of a reply.

What is the next step besides the alderman and the police?

  5. The next step would be a petition. signed by local residents and send a copy of the petition to Shiller and the person that she responds to. I sure that this would lite a fire under her a#$

  6. oh, puh-leez. Helen Shiller wouldn't give two joints about a lousy petition.

  7. All Shiller would use a neighborhood petition for would be to update her list of persons to retaliate against.

  9. re the previous post (last week?) about the fence ordinance: while fencing and landscaping would be an improvement, there is no requirement (that I found) for a locking gate. would a fence alone (w/o gate) deter the vagrants (look it up) from congregating? I'm not sure. I went to www.dearbornwholesale.com and informed them of the lively discussions re their property taking place on uptownupdate. perhaps I'll start mass faxing them also...

  10. Okay, I'm the guy that keeps talking abot the happenings in this lot and I also mentioned the people hanging out at the building in this picture. I was at the gym Wed and right in front of the windows there, 2 men and a pregnant women were having their lunch. One guy had 2 pint bottles of vodka in his front pocket and a bandage over his eyebrow.. The other guy couldn't focus or stand. They were snacking on chips, which when they finished, they tossed the bags on the side walk. One of the World Gym employess knocked on the windows and motioned for them to move along after about 15 minutes. After I left at 1:00 they had moved to the apartment entrance of the Jewel building. The Employee at World looked at me and said 'People have to chose what they do with their lives' I think we should just designate a fenced in area for these people to spend their day in so we don't have to deal with them wherever we have to run our errands. I am disgusted whenever I bring friends to my neighborhood. It's such a ghetto. I don't understand why people spend years on the streets instead of trying work towards something better or getting help for their alcohol and drug addictions. They act like their lives are completely normal.

  11. "They act like their lives are completely normal."

For them Uptown is Mayberry or Niceville. Haven’t you ever seen them shouting across the street to one of their chums as if they were calling over a rose bush on Wisteria Ln. How about the high-fiving when they greet.

If we were in any other ward we would be encouraged to meet with our alderman and discuss solutions. In this ward this isn’t even a remote option. What a shame.

    Okay Uptown Lady..

That was pretty funny. Here I thought they were living on 'La La Lane'

  13. What is wrong with high-fiving? I think the "completely normal" comment was in reference to people who think that hanging out on the street for hours on end and drinking or being on drugs is normal. Most adults are expected to go to work everyday (unless they are caring for children) and attend to their own needs.

Why is this abnormal behavior happening in Uptown? What about substance abuse, mental illness and poverty is not being adequately addressed so that loitering and public drunkenness is an option for these people? Clearly, saying "get to work you bum" is not the right solution...even though that is what the Alderman's most recent decisions reflect.

  14. I think about a month ago I was leaving World Gym around 7:30am and saw an actual cleanup effort going on in the Dearborn Lot in the area that butts up against the apartment building to the West. Somebody made the bums actually clean up their mess! It was hilarious, they looked and acted like bratty 9 year olds, complaining the whole time at being bossed around by some lady who was pointing to the piles of garbage. I have no idea who that lady was, or where she came from...but she needs to come back!
