Trash Runneth Over On Hazel Street

Someone who lives on Hazel apparently thinks corner trash cans are meant for their household garbage. (Hint: That's what the City's garbage bins and the dumpsters in your alley are for.) Check out these pictures we took today of three different corner trash cans all on one block: Hazel, between Sunnyside and Windsor. Disgusting! No wonder there's a rodent problem in the city.

We can't blame the City for tolerating this situation, since neighborhood trash is collected on weekdays and this happened over the weekend. We don't know what possesses people to do this to their own neighborhoods. Ironically, this was "Clean and Green" weekend!

Not sure what to say, except please call 311 and file a complaint if you see this situation. Unsightly, unsanitary and a breeding ground for vermin. Yuck.

  1. I've noticed that, for the most part, the bins in our area fill up to overflowing by Sunday, but are still emptied regularly on Monday morning/afternoon. This does look like an overwhelming amount of trash tho...

  2. I think these cans should be removed. When they overflow, the wind spreads the trash everywhere. By not having the cans available, it'll force people to throw their trash away in containers in the alleys, which have covers and keep the trash from blowing around. Lakeview doesn't have containers in their neighborhoods, why do we? It's unsightly and unclean.

  3. But, there has to be somewhere for the dog walkers to drop the dog poo bags or people will stop picking up.

  4. The thing I find objectionable is that these are obviously filled with someone's home trash bags. That's not the purpose.

I'd like to see the heavier cans with the covers, with just a six-inch hole or so for trash. That would stop the home trash AND the blowing around the overflowing trash problem.

  5. I live near the area. And this area indeed has a bad rat problem. I generally refuse to walk down Hazel because of this nasty situation. Also there is a building on Sunnyside (830 W. ish) that has its dumpsters out front on the street and they are always overflowing! Can't walk by without seeing a rat.

  6. huh,

I believe it is that same building @ 830 Sunnyside that causes these trash bins to overflow. It's a combination of their cans overflowing and laziness on their residents part. I've seen people walk out of the front of the building and just drop their trash in there without attempting to use their own dumpster. I've confronted them, but they don't give a sh*t. Maybe we can call 311 and get their building fined. They also leave their dumpsters on the street for several days after their trash day.

  7. Pablo,

I don't think they have moved their trash bins off the street for awhile now. I don't notice everyday but they've been out there for awhile. 311 is they next step; same for those trash bins in the pictures. I thought I read somewhere on UU about the landlord having a number of slum buildings in the area. Rothheimer, I think?

I've seen the police arrest some of the kids that hang out front of there, too. Often looks like they're dealing.

  8. the trash bins are usually full of beer cans and liquor bottles from street drinkers. do other neighborhoods provide trash bins for local low-lifes, instead of busting them for public drinking?

I get good results calling 46th ward streets and sanitation at 312-744-5030. they are very responsive and polite. they can ticket & fine owners of overflowing dumpsters; they can also empty the dumpsters if necessary.

I think the bins should go away. it is an idiotic solution to the problem of street drinking and trash tossing morons. if anything, it encourages such behavior.

  9. These cans must be removed. People (most people...) will not throw their litter on the ground. These bins are more an eyesore and create a problem where there would be none otherwise.

  10. Did anyone surmise that this might be a typical problem this time of year, with people moving in and out of buildings?

Someone does have a point about removing these trash cans----it's ironic, but their presence does contribute to their use as the "my problem solved" answer to someone trying to discard their "stuff." That's the reason they don't have trash cans in downtown Tokyo . . . it encourages the law abiding Japanese commuters to keep their trash with them until they arrive home.

Another case in point is the Salvation Army outlet near my home. Although there is a sign prohibiting after hours drop offs, people leave their discarded items anyway, creating a huge, unsightly pile in the front entranceway every Monday morning. Donors also double-park their cars while adding to the pile--the prevailing attitude seems to be, "Im (generously) donating to charity, so I have the right to do it in a way that doesnt inconvenience me in any way whatsoever."

  11. Nope it's a regular occurance billyjoe, these people are slobs, but thanks again for your brilliant commentary.

  12. There are people in my neighborhood who think nothing of tossing their fast food wrappers and cups into the gutter as they exit their vehicles.

Im reminded of a brilliant comment my brother made: "Show me a person with an immaculate car interior, and I'll show you a litterbug."

  13. On Google Street View, the cans are overflowing from the Sunnyside view, but nearly empty from the Hazel view.

  14. Although littering while driving one's car is also problematic, that's note the point of this post. The trash in this photo is clearly someone's home trash. I agreee that trash bins with smaller openings might help. So might calling Streets & San and 311.

  15. "I agreee that trash bins with smaller openings might help."

Then offenders will simply place the discard items by the sides of the trash cans with smaller openings. If the trash can is there, the offender will conclude that the person responsible will pick up everything in and around the trash can, too.

  16. A pig is a pig. Can't train it to be nothing else. It's not related to people moving or the weather. Those cans are always over flowing with peoples personal trash bags. Some people just don't take pride in thier community. I guess I should be happy they are at least tossing the garbage by the trash can instead of out on the street. Gives the hood a nice New York look.

  17. What I find funny about this is, we just had family members from Texas come in for a week, and no matter what area they were in (including Uptown) they just kept telling us how clean the city is. Of course I started to laugh (though they had a small point), because living here we see first hand what some "pigs" people are.

It's a sad fact in this world that there are people who were never taught, or teach their kids about taking care of their community and respecting others. Some people just think that the world is their own toilet, throwing trash no matter how small or large anywhere they damn well please.
