Islands In The Stream, Parking Free-For-All

No chance of any sort of Uptown related monument in the island between Racine and Broadway. Riv parking is MUCH more important.

  1. Is that the police caution tape STILL dangling from that light pole?

  2. it was just as bad, if not worse, during the five night wilco run last week.

  3. What's that sound I here? Oh nevermind, its the beat cops snoring in their squad cars at their favorite hideout, the 7-11 on Clark.

  4. Shiller doesn't give a rip about our parking problems. When the Chicago Park District closed the parks to tour bus parking, she gave all parking on Irving Park and Clark Street surrounding our cemetaries to the CUBS tour buses. She could have insisted that Lakeview find parking in their own neighborhho. Instead they come up here to belch diesal fumes all over the headstones, leading to earlier deterioration. So much for respect for the dead and funeral processions.

Then, at a recent Park District meeting, attendees were told that Shiller approved closing Montrose Avenue Lake Shore Drive on and off ramps all summer for park event traffic overflows so long as it wasn't every weekend. She could have asked that the Park District limit events so that they don't overflow our neighborhood, but no, she shafted our community again.

  5. Who do police allow to break the parking laws in Uptown? Let's make a Shiller list:

    1. Cars and semi's parked illegally for Riviera and Aragon events
    2. Scavenger (junk) trucks with no residential parking permits, safety inspections, licenses, or legal plates.
    3. Fly-by-night operators who hang goods on private fences and fence goods out of their vehicles.
    4. An individual living next to the park in his van for the fifth straight year and parked at the same spot on a city street for over 6 months.
    5. Favored developers, who use handicapped parking zones for their dumpster for over 6 months.

  6. I took that photo last Sat., night of one of the big Wilco shows and something at the Aragon. Thanks for using my photo, but my blog's actually City of Destiny, not "Density." (Very funny mistake, though!)

  7. While parking is a problem for shows at the Riv and Aragon, don't forget that those two theaters are the only reason many people ever come to Uptown, and many of them stay to visit the restaurants and bars on the area. These are all good things for continuing to improve the neighborhood. I am willing to put up with parking violations if it keeps people coming up here.

  8. As for allowing parking of buses for Cubs games: Cubs owned by Tribune. Tribune gives Shiller the "kid glove/endorsement" treatment. Do suppose their could be a connection?
It will be inteesting if the Cubs/Wrigley Field get sold

  9. Duh! Of course there is a connection.

Shiller won her first election supported by Daley when they jointly handed over our park to the CUBS in a 15-year, automatically-renewable-into-perpetuity deal. The CUBS got Challenger Park in Buena Park for vitually nothing.

Under this deal, the CUBS, the Park District, and the City were supposed to benefit the community by providing park improvements in exchange for the CUBS using the park for games days. The CUBS are supposed to maintain the area and provide security.

However, Shiller, Daley, the CUBS, city, and Park District have never delivered the things they promised to the community.

Swing by Irving Park and the "El" tracks. Community improvements mandated under the contract that you won't see there are a fountain, an ice skating rink, and falling debris shields to protect neighbors cars under the "El."

However, you will see city workers performing the cleanup the Cubs promised and park equipment in disrepair.

  10. During this past Saturday night's Aragon show, I enjoyed having to double-park in front of my place to unload a dozen shopping bags while a cop car went down Kenmore at 8PM ticketing all of the illegally parked concert-goers. My eventual destination? Spending 10 minutes to find a parking meter on Sheridan and pay to park for the rest of the night.

Yes, another sign the zone parking on Kenmore is working as advertised...

  11. Guys, the Riv is in Smith's ward; everything on Broadway down to Leland is 48. Believe me, I dislike Shiller as much as the next guy, but people parking in front of the Riv for a concert is a Smith problem.

  12. Pssst............the Riv is in the 35th precinct of the 46th Ward.

  13. Actually, to make it trickier...the Riv is in the 46th ward (the 48th extends down to Leland but between the east side of Racine and the west side of Broadway). However, that means the parking shown here is actually in the 48th ward. Looks like we have a cross jurisdictional problem.

  14. OH PLEASE! How the hell is this a Shiller problem?! The Riv (& I LOVE the Riv) has been doing this for years people! Don't you think that the owner(s)of the Riv should take responsibility? Yes, we need better parking but other venues don't have great parking- Metro, Vic to name a couple.
