Practice Makes Perfect

It was hard to miss the fact that the Air Show aircraft were doing their practice runs over Uptown on Thursday and Friday. The weirdest thing to us is always that the planes are out of sight by the time the roar of the engines hits. Luckily, long-time Uptown resident Bob Skutnick had his camera ready and shot the amazing photos below. He describes himself as "just an enthusiastic hobby photographer," but we think they're some of the best pictures we've seen. You can click on each one to enlarge it.

  1. Sorry but this is a waste of hundreds of millions of tax dollars. There is no real purpose for the Blue Angels and this government group should be disbanded. We can't afford health care for the poor and elderly but we can afford to pay jets to fly across the lakefront so the Lincoln Parkers can do something with their kids?

    1. For the armed forces, these are public relations and recruiting GOLD. It's a volunteer force now, and of course they show off the bells and whistles to attract volunteers. It also brings tons of dollars to the city as a tourism attraction. I don't like it personally, it always brings back echoes of 9/11, but I have family members who are Army Aviation test pilots and fighter pilots, and they joined up specifically because their fascination with military planes started when they saw the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds at air shows when they were kids.

What can you do about it personally? Write to and help elect members of Congress who believe in diverting fewer budget dollars to the military and more to social services and humanitarian issues.

  3. I agree that it's time for the A&W show to go. The things that the city chooses to throw money at disturbs me when we have people sleeping on every available bench downtown and under Lake Shore Dr., not to mention the current state of our public school system.
