Retail From Days Past At "New" Lawrence House

With Lawrence House having just undergone a top-to-bottom restoration, signs of its former life as an elegant residential hotel are coming to light.

Thank you to Roderick Reves for the photos of a long-hidden vintage sign for "Ground Gripper Shoes" on one of the front storefronts.

Ground Gripper Shoes were around from about 1900 until at least 1937, and were billed as "healthy shoes for men, women and children" that would put "the spirit of youth in your feet." They were recommended for policemen, nurses, and teachers. They were even endorsed by popular evangelist Billy Sunday.

Who knows how long the storefront sign has been there, waiting to make its 21st century debut?

The Grand Opening of Lawrence House is Thursday night. Be sure to RSVP if you want to attend and see what other treasures have been rediscovered.
