Shots Fired At Hazel & Buena (Updated 2x)

Here's what we know:  There is police tape up at Hazel and Buena, and the police have blocked off the street between Broadway and Clarendon.

We are being told, although it's unconfirmed, that the lobby of the high-rise at 833 West Buena was the site of a shooting, and it may have been the security guard at that building who shot an intruder. We are trying to get confirmation, but that's what witnesses on the scene are telling us.

The first few minutes after any news event are chaotic, so this is all unconfirmed at this time. We're getting a lot of requests to know what's going on, and that's what we are hearing. Don't take it as gospel until more facts come in.

Update:  A little more information has come in from a reliable source.  It states that the shooting victim was a 17-year-old shot in the hip.  He was driven to Weiss Hospital by his brother, where he is in stable condition.  The police have not confirmed who shot him, or why he was at the building, or if he lived there.  If you have any information, please put it in the comments or write to us at uptownupdate@hotmail.com.  We do not use sources' names, but we welcome information that we can pass along to readers.

Update:  Per the Sun-Times, it was a drive-by shooting.  "At 2:15 p.m., the 17-year-old boy was outside in the 800 block of West Buena Avenue when he heard shots and felt pain, police said.  The boy later told police he saw a white or silver car drive away from the scene.  He suffered a gunshot wound to the hip and took himself to Louis A. Weiss Memorial Hospital. He was later transferred to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where his condition was stabilized, police said."

  1. First it was 4550 No. Clarendon, and now down the street 833 W. Buena. Those two buildings are "Hud" subsidized buildings - correct? The LL needs to take action against the people inside who have children in gangs.

  2. I live next door in 823! Was wondering what happened. Used to live in 833 a couple years ago. That security guard is a drunk and totally creepy! Please update when you hear more...

  3. 833 is NOT subsidized housing, and there are no "people inside who have children in gangs". I've lived here many years and know most of the residents. Most are young professionals, college students and some elderly folks. As of yet, there is no information on what has happened. Hold your horses....

  4. I live in 833. I don't think there are any families with gang members here, thanks for your compassionate concern. These are one bedroom apartments, very few kids and no teenagers. We also don't have an armed security guard.

I came back home while the cops still had the block roped off, and it looked to me like someone kicked out the inner glass partition of the lobby trying to get past the locked security door. The police said someone was shot (and it looked like the outer door had been shattered by a gunshot), but I'm guessing they don't live here, but were either trying to get away from someone by entering our building or were breaking in from some strange reason.

  6. While this isn't a normal occurrence around here I would still like to know what happened. My girlfriend and I live here and she was outside a few minutes before she heard gun shots. If this is something related to our building I'd like to know so we can go elsewhere. Wasn't happy with the vague email we got about it today

  7. I live in 833 W. Buena as well. I've only lived here a month but have never seen a security guard. My roommate and I were home this afternoon at around 2:30 when we heard seven gunshots. A few hours later we went downstairs to find much of the glass in the entrance was shot out. I talked to two police officers outside who said a gang member was visiting the building, another gang member happened to be driving by and saw the other person entering the building, and shot at him. I asked if the person was OK and they said he would "probably be fine."

  8. I'm grateful for this update. I'm in 849 and have been freaked out since I came home today from work and saw what happened. Will be back to see if anything else is reported. Thanks!

  10. In response to all comments (chronologically)

Lianna: No. It is not a HUD subsidized building. As stated later, everyone is decent. I myself am a recent college graduate from DePaul and while I could technically live in low income housing despite my dismal income, I am educated.

Unknown: I do not believe that security guard works here anymore. Regardless, the security presence is terrible for the building.

Mary H.- I agree, and you are correct.

Scott: I had a similar experience. It was later confirmed with an officer I spoke with that the individual was shot in the hip and in stable condition being questioned.

    Kyle: Correct.

    Bluestreak: Correct.

Kyle: I absolutely agree. The email was vague and only referred to damage having occurred to our front entrance. Not mentioning the fact that AN INDIVIDUAL WAS SHOT IN THE MAIN ENTRANCE EVERYONE USES ON A DAILY BASIS.
I was at target (no pun intended) getting a few things at the time, but had I come immediately home from work I would have been in that pocket of time it happened.

Katie: I have a text from my girlfriend at 2:16pm who was in my apartment at 833 the time stating, "Thought I just heard 7 shots just now."

    Unknown: Cool.

kidsparrow: It does get annoying and the security guard in fact does party with the people sometimes. However this thread is about this shooting and further security of our residents and the block, not minor nuisance relating to it, albeit related in a sense.

My opinion: We, as residents of this building should accept nothing less than a FULL explanation from Karen or whomever is responsible to tell us once details are in. Our main entrance was shot in. 7 times. This shit probably is still probably rare for even housing in bad parts of town (excuse me if that sounds ignorant).

I am not going to accept that email as the final means of communication we get about this.

Was this person a resident and randomly targeted? Does this person live in our buidling? Do they have friends still affiliated with gangs living in the buidling?

Let me put it in perspecgive for you: We have a lot of cute little toddlers walking around in this building. Who are being raises here. Seeing those shots and the trajectory of the bullets and given that the young adult was shot in the hip....well...that makes it head height for a little one. I don't think we should go up in arms here, but I hardly think being apathetic is an appropriate response either.

By the way, two weeks ago did you all hear the five shots that rang out on Buena in the late night/early morning time? After I heard it I looked out my apartment window to see a silver hatchback backing up and picking up an individual who hopped in.

We need to come together as a community and especially as a building.

    1. Thank you for this. Sorry I thought it was a HUD building. If it was W. Buena Vista that would be off Sheridan Road, correct?
I believe there is a subsidized building between Sheridan & Marine Drive.

  11. I live in 833. We heard the same that around 2:00/2:30 PM someone was shot as they were trying to break in. Not subsidized housing although if someone wants to pay for half my rent, I'm totally open. I came home around 4:30 and the glass was still shattered. I left again around 7:00 PM and it was cleaned up as normal. The email was the vaguest thing in the world so we don't have any more news. Looking around online for a police report so we know the threat. Everyone in the building is a young professional, young families, college students or elderly residents who have been here for years. Most people are gone from 9-5 for work so it makes sense that it would have been an outside intruder. The only "security" guard that I've ever seen works Thursday night and Friday night and couldn't protect a damn fly. I doubt they'd give him a gun.

  12. Shootings and murders daily, Chicago's reputation going down the drain and our city is concerned about tax increases and red light cameras- wake up Rahm and do something about your terrorized citizens caught in the cross fire.

    1. Atlas, put everything in perspective. Chicago has about 2 Mil population. Out of that there are 500 murders, which is less than .01% of the population.
The shootings on the north side are "recent", this stuff didn't happen years ago, and because your beloved Supreme Court thinks that every American should own a gun - along with the NRA - well, every (thug) American owns a gun.

  13. We need a neighborhood watch. I walk my dogs up and down Buena and Hazel 3 times a day. And I happened to have just left my apartment 849 just minutes before the shooting occurred. This is a neighborhood will MULTIMILLION DOLLAR homes... this shouldn't be happening. Fortunately we also live in a neighborhood where people aren't afraid to tell the police EXACTLY what they saw. I believe that is the main difference between a "good neighborhood" and a "bad" one. Apathy will be the deciding factor on whether is was just a 'one off' or it becoming a regular occurrence... like Wilson or Lawrence.

  14. I mentioned people partying outside the building because I live across the street, and on some occasions have decided not to take my dogs out due to drunk people fighting and screaming in front of the building. I can't tell the difference between random drunk fighting and situations that might result in shots being fired. I also heard the shots on Buena recently. And two weeks ago, my car was vandalized, which isn't a huge deal, but isn't great either. I have lived here for over a year as a single woman, and always felt safe as long as I don't walk north to Wilson at night. Between the fighting and the shooting, I no longer walk around carefree.

    1. If your car was vandalized expect the insurance to go up. Just saying.

  15. @Lianna every post I've seen you put up. your more concerned about if the building is subsided housing and not the real issues. crimes are happening everywhere and not just in low income housing.

  16. Is it possible this kid accidentally shot himself in the hip? Idiots with guns have been known to do that when they tuck their gun in their pants. Shot could have ricocheted and shattered glass?
