Protected Lanes Celebratory Bike Ride On Tuesday

Uptown bikers, here's an event for you created by Active Transportation Alliance.  Not too strenuous, so even weekday warriors can handle the ride, especially the after-party.

"Join us to ride and toast the new protected lane on Broadway!

On Tuesday July 15, please join Bike Uptown and Active Transportation Alliance as we take a spin on Chicago’s newest protected bike lane and toast another victory for better biking and walking in the city.

We’ll meet at Montrose and Broadway at 6:30 p.m., ride up the protected bike lane to Foster, and then head back down to Fat Cat at 4840 N. Broadway for some socializing with bike and pedestrian advocates.

All are welcome to attend!"

The Facebook page to RSVP is here.

  1. I do welcome a bike friendly environment, but this was childishly executed at best (and at the cost of two whole car lanes). Broadway now looks a bit like an obstacle course on Nickelodeon's "Double Dare." I believe once winter rolls around it'll highlight what an incredible waste of space this is. I think it could have been done well and been a great addition... unfortunately, that was not the case.

    1. I agree. Looks like they let a kid with a box of crayons decide on the lanes instead of a civil traffic engineer.

"I have a great idea! Lets flip where the bike lanes are back and forth every block!" Fantastic.

    2. I agree when winter rolls in we are going to have a lot of problems. now the bike lanes needs their own traffic light. I was almost hit by a guy on his cell phone while riding his bike and not paying attention to any traffic lights.

  2. I am glad that Uptown is included in the plans to make Chicago a more bike-friendly city. I imagine it will take some people a little time to adjust from the car-centric culture of Chicago, but I am glad that Chicago is taking steps in the right direction. Just an FYI for attendees, the protected bike lane stops before getting to Foster.
