Food Town Would Like Your Opinions!

Food Town has been an Uptown stalwart for more than 30 years at the corner of Hazel and Montrose, and now they're reaching out to the community for your opinions.

A storefront next to Food Town is becoming available shortly, and owner Bill Musleh and his sons are exploring the idea of opening a coffee shop/cafe there.  That's where you come in.

What kind of products would make you come in to the store?  What sorts of coffees and teas do you want to see them stock?  What would make you make it your go-to spot?  If you were opening the perfect coffee shop for yourself, what would it be like?

You can leave comments here, or on UU's Facebook page, or email FoodTown4401@gmail.com.

  3. A nice sandwich, chips and beer@ lunch. Maybe chic noodle soup too.

  4. I live on that block, but I'm also pretentious about coffee. Brewing beans from local roasters (Intelligentsia, Metropolis, Passion House, etc) would be a great start. Pair that with with a small array of well made sandwiches and I could easily become a regular.

  5. Protein shakes would be good, they're right across from a gym.

  6. I'd like to have a coffee shop/cafe that serves fruit smoothies with real fruit and vegetables. I haven't found a place in Uptown that's Paleo friendly yet. :(

  7. Intelligensia, Stumptown, Dark Matter coffee. Cozy, comfortable interior with a chill vibe. Outside seating. Wifi.

  8. It would be great to have a place in the area that sells kombucha, and other fermented teas. Agree that smoothies and shakes would be very alluring since the gym is across the street.

  9. European brands like Lavazza and Julius Meinl would be great to have in the area. Definitely outdoor seating would be an excellent idea. Great idea guys!

  11. Although a coffee shop is a good idea, there are two very close competitors with Dollop on Clarendon and the coffee shop that moved out of the Skate Shop on Wilson. I would think about doing a tea shop as your focus with a wide selection of loose leaf teas. Take a look at Tea Gschwender to see how they operate. Also take a look at Dollop and the old Wilson Skate Shop Coffee place for kind of an idea of the work that will need to be done to the storefront. Lastly, the tea game is about your distributors and where you can source the teas (organic, China vs. Japan vs. India, First Flush, Pekoe, etc. etc.). People here are snobby about their tea and coffee. I can only say good luck and I wish you success! Oh, and I will definitely stop in.

  12. The coffee shop on Wilson is called Everybody's Coffee. It is at 935 W Wilson a half block east of Sheridan. They have real fruit smoothies, locally roasted coffee (Ipsento, Intelligentsia) and fresh baked good made daily in house. It has become my goto place for coffee and chillin' and did I mention FREE WIFI?

  13. Not a good idea. The foot traffic is not there. Two shops failed on Montrose next to you guys in last two years. Like you boys and your dad a lot. Don't want to see issues for you.
