Gas Leak On Argyle, Street Closed East of Sheridan

We don't have any official word on this, but readers are reporting that there's a major gas leak that has closed Argyle between Marine Drive and Sheridan Road.  There are police, gas company trucks, and fire trucks on the scene, which have been there since shortly after noon.

A reader reports that her building is without heat, which is a lousy time for it, with record-setting low temperatures expected to arrive later this evening.

Let's hope it can be fixed very soon.  If you take Sheridan or Marine as part of your commute, expect delays.

Update:  Residents say that their building management can't give them any estimate of when the heat will be back on, and it's starting to get cold.

Update:  A resident says that the city was doing sewer repair and hit a gas line while they were digging.  She reports that several residents on her floor are packing suitcases and leaving the building for other quarters due to the cold temperatures inside.  Work may have to go on all night.

  4. Just talked to a ComEd guy and he says they will knock on every door to relight appliances once the gas is back on which won't be for a few hours at least ... It's starting to get chilly in my place!

  6. Crews still out there as of 1 AM. All the people who are without heat tonight should be glad you don't live in a certain building on the next block (Carmen). They regularly don't run the heat AT ALL overnight, including last night, when they didn't run the heat once from 10:30 until 7 AM. Gets down into the mid-50s in our place quite often during the winter. I'll often turn on the gas oven to heat the place. And reporting to the city doesn't actually matter. I've done it at least once each of the past three winters and there's been no change.

    Stay warm, everybody!

  7. JD, contact your Aldermans office immediately. (I believe yours is Osterman) They are all pretty responsive to this...
