Ald. Osterman "Confident" Whole Foods Is Coming To Edgewater

For those who were disappointed that the Foster/Sheridan Dominick's is becoming a Mariano's and not a Whole Foods, as rumored:
"Dominick's will close their two locations in the 48th Ward on December 28, 2013. Mariano's is confirmed to purchase the store at 5201 N. Sheridan Rd. and I am confident that Whole Foods will soon announce that they will purchase the store at 6009 N. Broadway."
That's a pretty strong confirmation from Ald. Osterman in his email newsletter this morning.

So while Uptown won't be able to boast of a Whole Foods within our borders, we'll be book-ended by 6009 North Broadway to the north and 3640 North Halsted to the south.

In his newsletter, Ald. Osterman says the closing of Dominick's is a good opportunity to patronize other 48th Ward grocers, including these in Uptown:

"Viet Hoa Plaza, 1051 W. Argyle
Open 7 days a week from 9am-7pm
Viet Hoa is a great Asian food market located on Argyle. It is known for its incredible selection of fresh produce and seafood, including blue crab, shrimp and whole squid.

Tai Nam, 4925 N. Broadway
Open 7 days a week from 9am-8pm
With over 10,000 Asian food items at competitive prices, Tai Nam is a one stop for all grocery needs. They carry a large selection of fresh seafood, including fishes, shrimps, oysters, clams, and large tanks full of live lobsters and crabs. Try their huge selection of fresh breads, cakes, noodles, cookies and candies. They also carry a huge selection of microwavable or ready to cook items such as pre-marinated meat, shrimp dumplings, meat dumplings, dim-sums, among other products.

Old World Market, 5129 N. Broadway
Open Mon -Thur 7am-10pm; Fri- Sat, 6am-10pm; Sun 6am-8pm
Old World Market is known and loved for its affordable prices for "staple" items and diverse selection including African, Caribbean and Latin American products. "

  2. It will be great to have that in my neighborhood. I used to take the bus to the Ashland location so this will just be a quick bus ride.

  3. It makes perfect sense that Whole Foods would go to Edgewater, given the proximity to the Halsted store and the clientele who frequent the chain. However, in terms of retail, I could see REI as a potential candidate for Uptown, given the fact that there are so many runners/bicyclists in the neighborhood.
