Landmark This

Looks like the ICA Building at the corner of Sheridan and Lawrence is up for landmark status, according to the Mayor's office:

The building, which was owned by Kemper Insurance until 1972, when it was donated to the Institute of Cultural Affairs, is also known as 4750 GreenRise Uptown, and is "the largest one-stop social services center in the Midwest, with more than 25 different social service agencies serving in excess of 1,000 clients each week."  It's a gorgeous building and we hope a landmark designation helps to keep it intact and part of our community for a long time to come.

(Hat tip to Edgeville Buzz for the tip!)

  1. I learned from Open House Chicago they were planning on adding wind turbines of some scale and solar panels to the roof. I wonder if the landmark status will interrupt that process?

  2. Maybe they can give historical status to the mailbox nearby as the birthplace of cirrhosis

  3. I'm so happy this gorgeous building is getting landmark status. Every detail is ravishing.

Those magnificent brass light fixtures on either side of the door are enough by themselves to make the building. I'm glad they're mounted high enough not to be easy to steal-and probably weigh 200 lb each!

  5. The press release states Broadway, not Sheridan. Isnt this the Bridgeview Bank building?

  6. I'm pretty sure they meant Sheridan. The Bridgeview Bank Building is 4753 (odd numbers on the east side of the street). Plus, the ICA Building at Sheridan is the former Kemper building and the details mentioned in the press release (architect, etc.) match the ICA Building, as well as the designation as the Mutual Insurance Building.

Nice to know someone besides me has Sheridan/Broadway dyslexia.

  7. Is the Bridgeview Bank Building a landmark? If not, it should be. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in a city full of beauty.
