"Asia On Argyle" Sign Gets More Color And Some Community Support

As shown in the 2010 renderings of the Argyle identifier, aka Asia On Argyle, the horizontally striped posts have been added, which bring the acid green/chartreuse and red colors together.

NBC had a report on its Monday evening news about the controversy over the installment, mentioning that over 100 complaints had been lodged with the City over the sign.  However, in its "man on the street" interviews, the sign got unanimous good reviews.  Ald. Osterman is also interviewed in the report.

(Marc Vuong, one of those interviewed by NBC, is on the SSA #34 Advisory Board; he's also a business owner, of Hoa Lan Hair Salon, at 1059 W Argyle.)

Check out NBC's story here and the video below.

  1. My first reaction to these pics is that it does look a bit better now. We'll have to see what other details emerge. I'm really hoping that the neon will weather/get dirty enough as to not be quite as jarring to the senses.

  2. Embarrassingly bad. The garish colors really mesh well with the prison bars, broken king cobra bottles and empty crack baggies.

  3. It is looking a bit better with the stripes added. I just wish they had chosen a better font. I really don't like how there is no dot on the "i" in Asia, making it look identical to the "l" in Argyle. Also, I don't like how the "g" and "y" don't even fit on the sign.

  4. The colors chosen for the signage are very common & popular in east Asian cultures.

They aren't intended to suggest a western/Euro identity.

    That's the whole point!

The stripes are evocative of "Chinese yo-yos" (http://images.windycitynovelties.com/prodimages/detail/7078_detail.jpg).

As to other complaints about lettering, get over it.

  5. Yeah, I'm not seeing what the problem is. It's much improved over the old, dumpy way the station used to look.

  7. Uptowner, I'm with you on the font. It's like nails on a chalkboard.

C'mon, guys, you're better than that.

  10. "Ugly is ugly in any culture. Don't make this a race thing"

You could not be more wrong. DuneWonk is also not making it a "race thing", but a culture thing. You're making it a "race thing" by calling a cultural difference a "race thing".

This is not the first culturally and/or racially ignorant thing I've seen you say here, SuperHero. Take it down a notch.

  12. It would be okay if it's temporary sign. If this is supposed to be permanent, then I don't like it. There's nothing Asian about the style of sign and it doesn't blend in well.

  13. In my humble opinion it looks rather tacky. The community chose this? I use to live in the area and I still will come to the area to enjoy, so for me it makes no difference either way. If the businesses improve as a result then fine.. but the sign itself still looks tacky.
